  1. 1. What name should replace "Fighting Sioux" after it's retired?

Maybe its because I'm watching the Euro Cup, but I sorta like the sound of

The University of North Dakota United- no way does the NCAA have any issues or any of the PC crowd for that matter...

Interesting. The logo could be some sort of shield/crest with references to the state's/University's history. If done right, I could see that being a possibility.

Reapers has been the most promising alternative that I have heard so far. However, I'd prefer to just go with North Dakota for as long as possible even beyond the 3 year "cooling off" period.

Can't. Settlement agreement says we need to pick a new name. My bet is since the NCAA could care less about the laws we pass about the nickname, they probably aren;t going to let us go till 2015 without a nickname.

I see that Dubuque uses the name, but let me throw it out there for possibilities... Mystiques.

1: an air or attitude of mystery and reverence developing around something or someone

2: the special esoteric skill essential in a calling or activity

also

...an aura of mystery or mystical power surrounding a particular occupation or pursuit: the mystique of nuclear science.

Not that it matters, but I really hope we do not end up with an animal, conceptual (wild, heat, thunder, force from the north), or otherwise lame logo/mascot.

Also, personally I like the 'Stars' the best of anything I've heard thus far, the question is, does the NHL own rights to the name, or just the image that the North Stars used to use?

Just curious to know if anyone has any insight on this...Our colors match this VERY well...

Since, pink IS one of our school colors, how about the "Fighting Flamingos"?

See? It's got a aviation tie-in! Just gotta get permission from that squadron!

Or, the "Fighting Fornicators"? Sorry, can't show you a cartoon drawing of that...

Or, the "Fighting Flanigans"?

We can pick up on the interlocking ND and confuse the Hell outta the Notre Dame fans!

I know this would likely be very unpopular due to Minnesota connections and un-originality, but I think Fighting Saints has a nice ring to it.

I am wondering if they will pick a nome with "fighting" in it. I guess it would be a way to keep at least a little bit of the name. Not sure if they will pick a nickname beginning with "S" either. I guess we could be the "Fighting S_____ (S word). that way it will at least sound similar. "Here's your University of North Dakota Fighting Saints Scoring"!!! Has an OK ring to it I guess.

Sure. Just no bounty programs, okay?

Man, that story just won't end. It has been a long off season on the Gulf Coast.

(In my best Cliff Clavin voice) Little known fact... the Saints colors black and gold are due to oil being called "black gold". With all of the oil in ND, trot out a new name Saints with black and gold..... or not. ;)

Sidenote from the topic, but what is the Raph Engelstad Arena goin to do about their official logo? It has a predominant Sioux logo in the middle of it? They are a private entitiy not onwed by the University. Wonder what they will do there?

I think the NCAA said they would have flexibility with the arena, etc. on "historical" symbols. I don't know if that would be considered historical. I would imagine that the big glowing Sioux sign's days are numbered. Just an opinion on what will happen...

I do believe that UND was in full compliance with the NCAA during the time the nickname was retired (Jan - Feb 2012).
