I think Schmidt (FB) is a home run hire.

I think Jackson (Hockey) is a home run hire.

I think Hutter (WBB) is still a work in progress.

I think Sather (MBB) is an unmitigated disaster and the moment he is sent packing, it will represent a step forward.

I am a long-time critic of Chaves, but I think he is getting better at hiring coaches.

How many tries does he get

hownwas the Tupac hire

Vigen is never and was never going to come to UND.

"Kalen DeBoer was a finalist for the University of North Dakota (UND) head football coaching job in December 2013, alongside Bubba Schweigert, with both working as coordinators at Southern Illinois"

I do think his point still stands.  DeBoer was a very strong coach within the region who in fact, defeated UND head to head.  And I was at that game.  It was clear UND was out coached that game.

Interesting, I didn't think the position was ever advertised. Maybe they don't need to advertise? Was the hockey HC position actually listed in UND Human Resources page? Regardless, we have a coach. He'll be here for spring ball, in plenty of time to determine potential of the current group. And hopefully in time to be able to recruit as needed from the portal.

I don't know enough about the other coaches at UND to speculate too much, but I think we all felt Tupac was a good hire at time, so can we just let that go? It didn't work, but no one brought up any red flags at the time. And I'm still not convinced they won't do well at their next stop.

I like that this is an experienced HC and not their first time in the big chair. I suspect it's different in ways no one can imagine until you get there. And he's had success, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.

I have to believe that Derek has some connection to this, likely just saying, hey, if you are looking for a new job UND is going to be/is hiring (depending upon the timing 🙂). Anything beyond that is just being silly. FD is basically a suburb of NYC, so maybe hearing about life in GF sounded appealing to a guy with 2 kids. And the cost of living has to be better.

Recruiting is selling himself first and then the environment/team/program. This isn't a place where there enough NIL money to make a player overlook too many things they don't like. And no one we recruit is also being considered by a team that could dethrone T A&M next year, so players know what's in store come December.  They want a place there they can get an education, play, ideally win, and enjoy (or at least not hate) the process. Recruiting is also identifying talent. That might have been the Tupac's weakness. Nguyen's overseas players (4 Italians, all 6'1"+) speak to having connections to find talent missed by others, so that has potential.

No red flags for me. I'm looking forward to getting back to the days of Hardee and Prior, with winning records and lots of butts in the seats.

lol.  You are trying to make his point stand by completely changing the argument.

This hire better work out.  To go to the east coast and grab some rando is certainly a decision.

Saying a current head coach with a history of taking a bad program to the NCAA tournament in a few years is hardly a rando. If you look at any of my posts im not a Chavez fan at all.  But this seems to be a good hire.  Could it flop too ? Of course. But we tried hiring a former UND assistant and an assistant coach from a high major school.  Neither of those worked out and neither of them had any history to say it would work out.  Im excited for this pick and I hope someday mens basketball gets the same kind of coach.

To clarify, he's a Grad Assistant for Facilities and Gameday Operations, not the volleyball program.

I never stated or suggested that his son was involved with the FDU volleyball program or any sort of nepotism, just posting what is the most plausible explanation of how UND caught “nguyend” of a D-1 coach with a history of turning around a program.

So I see you are old school.  Only hire UND Alum or Red River Valley residents.  Not a great strategy for a D1 School.  Maybe works for Hockey but not many other sports.  You probably were happy with D2 athletics.   Sometimes you have to recruit outside the state of North Dakota to be competitive.  I for one am glad that we got some new blood in here.

Always gotta take the easy route it seems

Easy route would be hire a assistant coach or a former UND player or anyone with any connection to UND.  That seems to be the old UND way.  He went after a up and coming coach.  This is what I was hoping basketball would do.  Make a program great in a few years, leave for a better position but leaving the program in a better place.  This time i think Chavez DIDNT take the easy way out.
