When these coaches get let go they are absolutely devastated and cannot believe it. 1 Quote
Popular Post MoSiouxFan Posted Wednesday at 02:55 PM Popular Post Posted Wednesday at 02:55 PM With respect to Brad Berry's letter to the Herald, he went out the same way that he conducted himself throughout his time at UND: with class in every respect. He is a class act and a credit to UND in every respect. 8 19 Quote
RhettRingers Posted Wednesday at 02:59 PM Posted Wednesday at 02:59 PM Getting news there are apparently a group of players who voiced that if it's not Dane they are gone, one of them being Livanavage. Quote

Letting the players run the program is not a good idea. I honestly hope Jackson works out. Otherwise, these players will shoulder a lot of the blame. Quote

If we wanted this, we could have just kept Berry. More of this mid-major talk. More overreaction to NIL. Denver is not a big-time, Power 4 school (not even close). But they have won three NCAA titles in the last seven years (minus the COVID year). There are only nine Power 4 schools that sponsor Division I hockey: The seven B1G schools, plus Arizona State and Boston College. I honestly don't think the future of the NCAA tournament will feature those schools taking turns winning Natty's while everyone else settles for being their stepping stones. The 1883 Collective should have been started earlier and we need to build it up substantially. I want that card in our deck. But Division I hockey is not FB, MBB or even WBB. Most NIL money will go to FB, with basketball being second. All other sports will be way down the list and not even noticed by most people. Our current problems can be boiled down to three things: 1) An athletic department with rudderless leadership that is very slow to react to changing circumstances in college athletics. I honestly don't think a true national search was ever conducted here. Chaves did what he always does, push the easy button. It's disappointing and it's why I have been calling for his dismissal for about a year now. Hopefully Jackson is up to the task. 2) Having a head coach who is a nice guy, but simply wasn't head coaching material and was much better as an assistant. Berry is a great human being, but simply does not have the skill set to be an effective head coach at the Division I level. I do wish him well in whatever he does next. 3) Having that previously described coach stay too long. I think Blais had it right: 10 years in one place is long enough. Berry was here nine years. The last seven of those years were very underwhelming when it came to national level success, which Denver has had no problem achieving during that time frame. Let's not push the panic button and assume that our best days are behind us. They don't have to be. Success is a choice. So is mediocrity. Let's make the right choice. Berry has coached 10 seasons here at UND Quote

I have heard this as well. Dylan James is basing his decision on staying by Dane getting promoted and who will be staying in the program. Quote

Can't just have a ton of culture depth guys that Andrew O'Neill projects to be, need more top tier talent, and the CHL being opened up, it's a huge opportunity to boost future rosters. Can't keep losing recruiting battles for the next Kent Johnson. McKamey was a nice start in Western Canada, hope he stays committed. Quote

Will Chaves make an emotional, moment in time snapshot decision or look at the big picture and long term plan…hahahahahaha I started laughing as I was typing. That’s not how they do things in GF and the UND athletic dept. Welcome aboard (again), Dane Jackson. Hopefully some good assistant coach hires and a “GM” can make a difference. 1 Quote

Godsmack Posted Wednesday at 03:22 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:22 PM I would love some insight about the merits of a Dane Jackson hire. And I’m not being facetious here either, I genuinely want to know as I suspect there’s a lot to like about him as well. I’m guessing he’s wired into the Canadian recruiting circuit, knows the coaches, etc. Quote
SJHovey Posted Wednesday at 03:25 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:25 PM I wouldn't be surprised if the players had a close relationship with Jackson. As I understand it (having never played major college athletics) it's not unusual at all that the assistants are the closest to the players, while the head coach is more unapproachable. It's the assistants who are there, sometimes keeping secrets, helping to clean up messes, etc... I think that it was maybe Hak that talked a little about that after he was promoted. How do you, as the head coach, adapt from being their buddy to being the head coach. If Jackson is promoted, he'll have to do that. Quote
