Sadly more people watch that second tier league than d1 college hockey……

Haha are you sure about that?

Fascinating to see how much is BS vs legit. By all accounts, this off-season will be a complete disaster if Berry is retained. Only chance they have is to move quickly from him. Start the clock at 48 hours.

Time has a way of weeding out what are facts & what are unsubstantiated rumors & hearsay; with some simply saying stuff to garner attention & get reactions out of people. Fear porn. Being that the portal window is open for 45 days, we will know with certainty by May 15th who bolted & who didn't.

If they're gonna get rid of him before next season...it needs to happen soon, like in the next week.
Then you need to have a replacement lined up (something that would have already been in process if the admin was serious about making a change), then work on retaining players & recruits.

I agree with @InHeavenThereIsNoBeer, I think Berry is given one more season to ride out the end of his contract.
We'll see how this goes.  I'm not very confident in anything with the program at the moment.

Agreed that if he is going to be released this off-season that this needs to happen in the next couple of days. That way the new coach would have ample time to introduce himself & his philosophy, to both the current roster & all future players, well before the portal opens.

Has college hockey ever been broadcast on "over the air National TV?"

FCS has more schools.

And higher attendance.

It clearly has a bigger following than college hockey.

Nearly 2 and a half million watched NDSU win the natty this year.

I don't think hockey natty was ever broke the one million mark.

Are the assistant coach contracts year to year or are they set to expire with Berry’s?  If Berry is allowed to stay one more year then something has to give.  But just like his loyalty to #27, I don’t see anything changing unless he is forced to do so by someone else.

It’s not even close.  Football is America’s game.  Hockey is a small niche sport. There are around 130 FBS teams and 130 FCS teams alone.  60 or so hockey teams.
A quick google search shows 458,000 watched the BC vs DU title game last season. FCS semis had around 1.5 million.  Title game had 2.4 million.

And let's be honest, college hockey is so irrelevant in the national picture there isn't enough interest/teams to even have a "second tier."

Only 60ish D1 schools. The same amount of teams in March Madness.

And there's no D2 hockey, so "second tier sport schools" get to play "first tier hockey" only because of lack of national interest.

Lack of national interest sure, but also cost/expenses. Maintaining ice costs a small fortune, hence why you need dozens of millions to start a D1 program. Soccer & basketball cost nothing, (almost) everyone loves football so that gets funded regardless. Hockey is such an expensive sport. I bet NDSU would have a D1 program if it weren't so expensive. Title IX of course plays a factor with who has a D1 program.

Back to the original point, Berry needs to be gone. Program is so stale, you should never struggle to beat a horrific Miami team in both games in Oxford.

NCAA Hockey (and hockey generally speaking) is popular in about 10 of 50 states. Extremely popular in maybe 5 or 6 of those 10. Sad reality, but such is life

Someone once told me that NCAA hockey is seen by most people how NCAA hockey fans see softball or lacrosse.

Hockey is more popular than it used to be. Look at where some of our players are from now.

Meh.

North Dakota has plenty of cities that have indoor ice for their high school hockey teams.

problem with ndac fb fans is that they just don't realize that two of the biggest busts in the history of the nfl came from fargo.....

mr trey just might be biggest ever....in the history of the nfl. let that sink in

on the other hand......

jimmy and kuper

problem is our recent guys are cfl all stars..not bad but we need more @gfhockey rated chippas to go to the nfl

Sure, which makes it more puzzling why Berry/Jackson/staff don't recruit more Illinoisans & Californians. Haven't had someone from California since Grimaldi, Strathmann the first guy from Illinois since the mid 2000s. I know most of the California kids will prefer Denver (and now Arizona State) while most of the Illinois kids will prefer Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, but still, you gotta make the effort to actually recruit.

didn't think too much about bryn c...until schmaltz talked him so much up

could he be our david carle?

Jason Herter should be a consideration.  Did well under Sandy and WMU is doing well since he got there.

Herter is 54 and I have heard he has no desire to be a head coach again.

No UND alumni hires! The gene pool needs to be re-populated with a new stud.

and, as someone implied earlier, hire a hockey ops person who is basically a GM of personnel

This is a guy I would hope they would reach out to.

46 years old and regarded as a great recruiter.

Can also put him on the list of possibilities, sounds like he has a very high drive to succeed. Only concern is that former alum who carry some weight in the UND hockey community might push for one of their own, a good ol' boy.

Would be ideal if the AD used an advisor or formed a small selection committee of those knowledgeable in the sport when searching for & interviewing the applicants, so that the best possible candidate can be chosen ... to prevent the AD, who probably has no clue about hockey, from making a disaster with the next hire.

who has been the most successful football player in the last 30 years from either UND or NDAC???

I certainly would agree.   The problem is that it was before many on this board were even born.   Same with our hockey glory days.

Last time UND hired outside the "family" they got Dean Blais.  That seemed to work out pretty well for everyone.

He was a UND assistant coach for 8 years.

But yeah, nowadays it seems even our assistant coaches need to former UND players.
