sioux24/7 Posted December 31, 2022 Posted December 31, 2022 I’ve wanted to wait on this topic for a bit but yesterday has me damn near ready. My unrealistic top choice is Ben McCollum, I’ve said that over and over. Other than that, I’m looking at Kyan Brown, Gameli Ahelegbe, Jeff Boschee, Saul Phillips. Three D2 guys and 2 D1 mid-major assistants. I would love to go pluck a rising D1 assistant but a) I don’t know who those are and b) the financial aspect. Quote

UND treats its “division one” athletic programs like those of a middle school - everyone gets a participation ribbon and a pat on the back. Why would you ever want to hold the players and coaches to a high standard? I suppose because it might cost a few $$ and could hurt some feelings … Could just as well still be division II at this rate … extending losing coaches and being about as stagnant as possible during an otherwise typical cold slow winter in North Dakota. UND athletics has an opportunity to ignite interest and following during the dead of winter, but instead drops the ball on a consistent basis. 2 Quote

So there's some hope there. 3 Quote

From watching him interact with players before the game and during the game it seems like they really respect him and will listen to him. He was listed 11th on an ESPN “40 under 40” list of top coaches under 40. Young guy and seems like he really knows basketball. My opinion would stay away from anyone on this staff. Let's get someone fresh. New start for the program. He could remain on as a assistant coach especially if he has a good relationship with our star players 1 Quote

If you are referencing the Bio on the UND website, the "40 under 40" is Shantay Legans not Steven Aldridge... My wish list would be the following: Kevin Kruger, Joe Krabbenhoft, Kyan Brown, and Billy Brown (nostalgia) 1 Quote

bincitysioux Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 It's hard to believe that Sather has been able to take this program to a lower point than Brian Jones did. 2 Quote
UND1983 Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Jones knew how to worry less about culture and take a chance on talent that may not be choir boy-like. Quote

It’s is possible - crazy, I know - that both Jones and Sather were/are not good coaches for UND. With that said, Jones at least had connections in Iowa for some talent. Sather has shown that his coaching and recruiting connections are both subpar. Quote
UND-FB-FAN Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 This isn’t rocket science. Most professionals know what they’re worth, including those in the coaching profession. You get what you pay for. UND spends embarrassingly low amounts on basketball, improving amounts for football, and vast majority towards hockey, as we know. UND tried to circumvent the minimal spending issue by hiring from local DII - didn’t work, obviously, at least this time around. Quote

I've heard from sources that UND lost a TON of money having the women's hockey program which they are still trying to recover from. From the sounds of it might be out of the massive hole in a few more years which I would imagine trickling down to help spending on other programs i.e football and basketball. Quote
F'n Hawks Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 He hasn’t been terrible at recruiting talent, he did have the freshman player of the year the past two seasons. He hasn’t been able to retain talent, and continue to build, which falls fully on him. 3 Quote
Kab Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Would like to see boschee he has a passion for the game and I think he could relate to todays players should also have a recruiting path in Kansas Quote
NewUndFan Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 I wouldnt mind Boschee. He is local and has Kansas connections. He is young and could probably relate more with the players. Unless a more experienced coach applies, I say give him a shot. This is all for nothing if Chaves goes and extends Sather at the end of the year. 1 Quote
GoodGood Posted January 2, 2023 Posted January 2, 2023 Here are where Sather's recruits have ended up in the transfer portal. I don't believe other D1s are necessarily lining up to poach our talent Carlos Ramsey - d2 Hawai'i at Hilo Gertautas Urbonavicius - d2 UMary Seybian Sims - d2 Arkansas Tech Andrew Bergan - d2 Northern State Tyree Ihenacho - d1 JMU Nate Shockey - d2 Quincy University Gavin McGrath - not playing basketball? Paul Bruns - d1 USD Brendan Howard - NAIA University of Providence I think the current roster has a number of guys who would be better suited playing d2 level ball. Overall I do not think the x & o's have been good under Sather and i think the level of talent brought in has been well below what's needed to compete at the upper end of the conference. 2 Quote

To be fair, Sims transferred to NKU first, then went to a D2. He and Ihenacho never should have left. Quote

This is just stating Sather recruits D2 players. yes both players should have stayed at UND where we have a coach that likes D2 players. Quote
