That likely will mean minimal overall change for UND, and we are left with the same cultural limitations, but we will see … This will likely happen… minimal change may come with it. Schmidt knows all the assistant coaches and will likely keep most if not all in place … so much for those Fresno State/Washington/Alabama/San Diego State connections, huh? This is a move I am concerned about, but we will see ultimately what plays out … Quote

UND Football Fan Posted Monday at 01:45 AM Posted Monday at 01:45 AM USD recruited athletes on defense and UND never gave up less than mid 20’s a game in their best year. Let alone shut down an offense (especially a NDSU or SDSU offense) on their own turf. Quote

Need an overhaul on defensive staff. Quote

Still would prefer a Johanes as HC with Fruechte as OC, but warming up to Schmidt with Fruechte. Imo, what’s been missing is swagger, a confidence with the program. I’m more excited with the thought of those combos than I would be with Baldwin. This....^^^ Then recruit some dudes. A James Harden type. A Digger Anderson type. Quote

Again, both are worth consideration but they sure aren't hitting your self imposed criteria of up and comers or someone who is moving up the ranks quickly and would look to do the same at UND. Age shouldn’t be a crucial factor. Best head coach (or best coordinator if not previously a head coach) is the most important. That in essence means they can be a fast riser because they’re successful. Bolte and Baldwin have both been good to very good head coaches. Schmidt has never been a collegiate head coach and his SDSU squad had a horrible 2024 season. It’s going to happen, but this is once again feeling like not the right choice, but the stereotypical “good ol boys” choice for UND once again. Given it would be Schmidt’s first ever collegiate head coach opportunity, will see how it goes and hope for the best … he should be able to at least stay awake for team meetings. 1 Quote
Cratter Posted Monday at 01:49 AM Posted Monday at 01:49 AM Schmidts name being thrown around so much on this site.....means, I'd venture to guess, it's being tossed around equally in the athletic department... It definately feels like there's smoke smoldering.... Quote
zonadub Posted Monday at 01:50 AM Posted Monday at 01:50 AM The upside is that DeBoer has had much more impact as a head coach than he had as a coordinator. Maybe Schmidt could be the same. Hope that coordinators from NDSU, SDSU and maybe even USD apply and get consideration. Bring in the culture of winning. 1 Quote
shep Posted Monday at 01:51 AM Posted Monday at 01:51 AM Lots of talk of D, but when the HC is a D coach does the DC deserve all the blame for a bad D? Quote

UND92,96 Posted Monday at 01:55 AM Posted Monday at 01:55 AM I could be way off base here, but if Baldwin were to be hired, that might provide a major indication that Chaves isn't really on the hot seat after all. I certainly respect what Baldwin did at EWU eight-plus years ago, but I can't imagine you'd want your AD to hire a guy with no previous connection to your traditional recruiting areas, whose career seems to be on the downswing and whose candidacy seems to be mostly based on the fact that your AD previously hired him, if you really planned to can that AD soon. 1 Quote

MNHawk Posted Monday at 01:55 AM Posted Monday at 01:55 AM If we are going to hire a coordinator, I’d go with this guy: https://gojacks.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/ryan-olson/2521 Give me a guy who is young, can develop dominant offensive lines in the MVFC, and has no UND ties. Quote
bincitysioux Posted Monday at 01:57 AM Posted Monday at 01:57 AM I would prefer to see a complete break from the Roger Thomas coaching tree along with the archaic defensive scheme that has not been effective since the DII era........ 4 Quote

I also think by naming an interim, this is going to drag out longer than any of us want and they don't know who the guy is yet. I am hoping I'm wrong and it moves fast regardless of who it is. But I'm concerned the longer it takes, the more damage is done. 1 Quote
