The admin were the ones that told him to go get outside experience. He young, knows winning, and wants to advance. Doubt there’s even interest but he’s my pick In my opinion he should have been the next coach there. That's why I said he would be the most motivated to beat the team down south. Prove they made a mistake 3 Quote

But if Nielson wants to coach a few more years, who knows? Maybe Johansen doesn’t want to wait and is ready to move on. Is he a USD alum? Just curious why he would want to wait for that position, as UND has a lot to offer with the facilities coming on board, and Grand Forks vs. Vermillion. Quote

Schmidt has never been a head coach collegiately and his time as UND defensive coordinator was not that great - no playoff wins. His short time as DC at San Diego State has not been going well. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beau_Baldwin Another perhaps overly simplistic method that would have barriers, but could produce high quality candidates, would be to look at recent Division II champions: Tony Annese - Ferris State https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Annese Todd Hoffner is intriguing although no championship https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Hoffner Toldeo DC based on his time at Mount Union https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_Kehres Travis Johansen is gaining steam on here and I think he’s a fine candidate https://goyotes.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/travis-johansen/1537 Lastly, there is Scott Wooster. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Wooster All in all, I can guarantee at least one of the above will apply and be interested. I would not look towards Danny Freund, Isaac Fruechte, Jake Landry, or even Luke Schleusner, I’m afraid, as they do not have head coaching experience, FBS experience, or signifiant success as a coordinator. Badly need to get some outside experiences into the UND fb program. I don’t believe Johansen has HC experience either, but I would still look at him. I would also look at Schmidt and Schleusner regardless of no HC experience either. All 3 of these guys are Coordinators with an upward trajectory. Candidates who have had success as a head coach and D1 coaching experience as a coordinator would have an advantage over guys who have never been a HC. A couple of thoughts: I don’t care if they have a UND connection or not. I want the best available of the applicants to become the next HC. The guy (Gene Murphy) who turned our struggling program around in 2 years (albeit a long time ago) was a former player and long time asst with no HC experience. Roger Thomas had UND connections and turned the program around, but it took longer. Having UND connections can’t be a requirement nor should it disqualify anyone. 1 3 Quote

I just meant that if, hypothetically, Nielson told him he was retiring after the season or even after next season, maybe he’d be less interested in moving on now due to already having the players to fit his system, not having to uproot family, etc. Obviously I agree that UND is the better job. 1 Quote

Preferred criteria would ideally be consistent success and a fast riser. Want someone who is capable of succeeding at UND and not plateau here. How that would look is someone with success as head coach (ideally) but alternatively success as coordinator, and someone who has moved up the ranks in relatively short amount of time. Success probably should be defined as wins. 1 Quote

I do have a desire for new blood in the program though. 1 Quote
Cratter Posted Sunday at 07:05 PM Posted Sunday at 07:05 PM If UND didn't hire from within so often maybe we wouldn't be in this position and only have one championship in a 100 years. The status quo is obviously not working. Quote

I’m intrigued and most interested in the ones never before a coach at UND: 1) Beau Baldwin, Calgary Stampede quarterbacks coach 2) Travis Johansen, South Dakota defensive coordinator 3) Brent Bolte, Bemidji State head coach 1 Quote
