With only three applicants (two that meet the criteria), what’s taking Chavez so long? Just flip a coin. Big thanks though to Schmidt & Tibesar for applying. How embarrassing that would have been if nobody applied!

I’m good with either! Go Hawks!

This would suggest that there was no true national search to begin with.

Not necessarily, just that nobody else applied. Thought it was a more appealing job, but guess not. Especially odd that no D2 HC’s were interested.

I’m sure there were plenty of applicants from around the country, but were any as qualified as Schmidt and Tibesar? Those two have good resumes with ties to the program.  I’d argue most with their background are looking to stay FBS, where these two want to build their Alma Mater into a national powerhouse.  I think we are lucky to have two “inbred” candidates with their background interested in coming back to restore and reenergize the program.

D2 HCs were interested.

Chavez wasn’t accepting calls. Only applications

Ok...I talked to, know, and am friends with two D2 head coaches that applied and interviewed.

That do anything for ya?...

Keeping it vague, did they get any feedback as to why they didn’t continue in the interview process?  Like no D1 experience or anything like that?

Resume isn’t the best imo

Then you haven’t reviewed it.

All-American whose teams won 3 Conference titles, 3 playoff berths and a national championship. He has coached at the D2, FCS, and FBS levels including Big 10 and PAC 12. Has been a DC at multiple levels. He has coached in the NFL and CFL.  Extremely bright and an excellent recruiter.

Schmidt’s  resume and reputation is also impressive. They are both excellent candidates. Hopefully they interviewed well. If there is another candidate who has similar qualities and experience and convinced the decision makers he is the best choice to lead UND back to a National Championship that’s who they should hire.

Good question.

Simple answer: UND was NEVER hiring a D2 or D3 guy for this job opening at this time.

Both of their resumes are impressive. I didn’t realize how extensive Tibesar’s experience is until I looked it up again.

Is Schmidt clearly a better candidate than Roehl, and if so why?

Yes and so are Tibesar and Caruso (if he applied). The book on all of them has “more chapters”. He has nothing on Schmidt or Tibesar.

Has quite the record at Duluth.

And basically zero playoff success. In fact it’s been a slow regression since he took over if you look season over season.
