That will be everyone’s argument that endorsed this decision, but that remains to be seen. If UND hires Schmidt, and San Diego State’s defense does much better in 2025, and UND struggles with Schmidt in year one, there will be a lot of early sandbagging … Quote

Did you lookup the defenses in that time frame? Not as bad as you want to make it sound while pounding the table for Beau Baldwin also those were all in the Big Sky where teams take way more chances and had bigtime offenses from what I recall Quote

I still think this is way better than hiring internally. Quote

But yeah, there will always be risk. And of course coordinators can be hired and be successful, but new found success is rare, especially when there has been years of struggle. That tends to predict what is going to happen … not sure why UND football needs to keep taking the uphill path. I see potential advantaged both ways and neither path is certain. Successful HC is a plus but so is experience at a higher level which I am hoping brings better contacts for finding assistants, recruits and portal players. Quote

But will any of his FBS contacts want an FCS job?? Quote

Not hedging, will support whoever they hire, just explaining why Schmidt shouldn’t be considered a slam dunk and he’s not really in my top 5. Then again, though, I don’t know who all applied. Schmidt was always a favorite from the start. Remember, Schmidt is an understudy of Bubba, so will there be too many similarities? 1 Quote

I don't think your top 5 are bad choices and part of me hopes they pick someone from your top 5 so you have skin in the game. Maybe I can stop worrying that my expectations are too low and that is what causes us to lose some games. 1 Quote

I don't think you can necessarily assume Schmidt would be Bubba 2.0. He'll have his own ideas and philosophies as head coach. 2 Quote

How can you blame UND fans, especially diehards, for being cautious. We all remember the decision to hire Bubba Schweigert over Kalen DeBoer … Quote
shep Posted December 8 Posted December 8 Didn’t like Schmidt’s D when he was here, but he could blame that on the HC. Frankly, rather have Fruechte 1 Quote

My point is when he was working for Bubba, he had to defer to his decisions even if he didn't agree with them. As the head coach, he will get to implement his own vision and philosophies on everything from recruiting to attitude to game plans and so on. There were changes from Roger Thomas to Dale Lennon. There will be changes here as well. 1 Quote

Bjorkman was replaced by one of his assistants. We still call him Gino. And he made big changes to the program. Good changes. Whether it would work out in this case is the big question. I remember that hire. I thought the other guy should be picked. I talked to a hockey player on the team and he said Gino was the guy. The team believed in him. I did know that rube was not a good coach. 1 Quote
