If the internal discussion is anything like what the discussion is on here, I have to imagine there’s some debate as to what UND football needs in their head coach in order to take the next step. My two cents, give us a proven winner at head coach. My rationale is simple, it can translate. Bubba won around 51% of his games at Duluth, then won 53% of his games at UND. Quite similar. I’d like to see a coach with a proven high winning percentage get the job. A guy with no head coaching experience is high risk, but possible high reward, in my opinion. And although high reward sounds nice, you can’t go with high risk if you’re like UND and never terminate / fire coaches until they are mediocre for a decade plus … give me the proven winner at HC. 1 Quote

Ever since announcing that UND was going to D1, the AD has screwed up. Mussman was not a good hire and Bubba stayed too long. UND needs to get this right. 1 1 Quote
The Sicatoka Posted December 6 Posted December 6 I've figured this whole ruse out: @gfhockey and @Shawn-O are playing us! gf will be HC and -O will be his OC. They're in negotiations now. Looking forward to frozen concentrated orange juice at Sunday breakfast. Quote

His kids are out of the house and I don't know that UST has any immediate plans to move on from the PFL. It has to be tough going from the Athletic Department's top priority to an after-thought after UST decided to flagship hockey and basketball and build a new baseball/softball complex, while football mires in a non-scholarship league in the most fertile recruiting area in the MVFC. Caruso is a winner and familiar with the culture of the MVFC (though he coached at NDSU/USD pre-MVFC), and is an excellent recruiter. That said, he's extremely comfortable in St. Paul, his job couldn't be more secure, and his wife has been battling some health issues. Guessing he's not going anywhere. 2 Quote

I’m hopeful our AD reached out, sold him on it and urged him to apply. At least I think that’s what AD’s typically do. Was unaware that his wife’s health challenges were ongoing. Quote

Caruso has great passion, great intensity, a little PJ Flecky for some people's taste, but the results speak for themselves. I just think Drake and Butler raised their level when Caruso came in and won the league with mostly D3 guys. Also, the issue with the PFL is your best players have one foot out the door. Their non-conference games against the Big Sky/MVFC are basically auditions for scholarships elsewhere. You're fighting over players with the NSIC. 2 Quote
