If there is another reason , maybe.  But not that.

The preseason polls are pretty much based off of last years results, it would have been hard to do any worse than last year.

So that is a good reason to hijack every basketball thread into a "Fire Jones" thread? If I was on this team and all some fans wanted to talk about was firing my coach I wouldn't think much of those fans.

UND is on a 4-game losing streak away from the Betty. If we don't want to talk about how incapable Brian Jones is, should we talk about how this team can't win on the road? The FACT is UND MBB is on a 4-game road losing streak; not something you want to take into a conference tournament, regardless if it's on a neutral floor or not. Reno will still be more foreign than playing in the Betty in front of the home crowd.

I'm just speculating, but I imagine Faison really, really wants to avoid having to buy Jones out, as even though the funds would be privately raised, it would still "look bad" in this climate of budget cuts. Rather, I believe Faison will be honest with Jones and tell him he's going to be brought back for next season, but there will not be another extension without meeting some pretty lofty goals, e.g. 20 wins, top-2 finish in the Big Sky during the regular season AND an appearance in the conference championship game.

This is about as accurate and level-headed of a take on the situation I've seen in a while. People can argue it all they want but the reality is, there is more to a decision than looking only at what happens on the court (which I don't think anyone would argue has had more disappointments than it should). It would be a tough call letting a coach go into a lame duck year but unless there is some sort of trade-off to give the appearance of a one year extension, this seems about right.

There is a fire Jones thread but people get sh!t on if they post there. Therefore you will get this kind of talk in most of the game threads, especially if UND loses to SUU in Reno.

I've always thought it might light a fire under a coach knowing they have a good season they'd make more money and/or get another contract.

Sometimes a back up against the wall produces good results. With the players returning and the potential seen from this team, Jones could embrace the challenge.

Heck they have a pretty easy path to the Semis, he could help his negotiations for next year by what he does this week.

Very possible but the biggest reason tends to be for recruiting purposes.

Didn't SUU go winless one year until we played them and they beat us. Jones needs this tourney to save his job.

Yup.  Believe they were like 1-15 or something like that in the BSC 2 or 3 seasons ago and we lost to 'em I think with a half decent team.  Another fine coaching job by Jones that season.

All of this is plausible and I get this angle.

However, he is essentially firing him by doing that.  Nobody works into their final season on their contracts any more.  That is very telling and a huge PR problem for the coach on the recruiting trail etc.  Huge problem.

Any coach worth his salt that has any pride in themselves would go elsewhere and get a different job if presented with this scenario by their AD.  The proverbial writing is on the wall in this situation.

But he won't/wouldn't because this is the best he can do in my estimation.  Just a bad situation all-around.

I believe there is more behind the scenes fallout than people might think from alums, fans, boosters and more.

10 years is an awfully large sample size, but we will see.

Faison needs to show vision and leadership on this moving forward.

I think UND should easily win their first game,

They should comfortably win their second game.

Anything less is unacceptable.

Weber will be a tough game but we are playing with house money at that point. I will be disappointed if we lose but if we at least show up for a big game but lose, I will look forward with excitement to next season.

A couple of things you can bank on if UND is to go deep into these playoffs - at least three of these will happen:

Berstine will not get into foul trouble early
Baldwin and McDermott will be lighting it up with 3 pointers
Candall will be slashing and burning them.
Hooker will be Hooker
Avants will continue to play much bigger than his height
Seales will rediscover his touch

A couple of things you can bank on if UND has an early exit - at least three of these will happen:

Drick has more fouls than points in the first 10 minutes
Baldwin and McDermott can't find it from 3 point land
Crandall tosses a few passes into the stands
Hooker will be Hooker
Avants gets into foul trouble
Seales is off

And no matter which way it goes you can bank on it that Shanks will have two fouls called on him within the first 10 minutes and at least one of them will be a head scratcher.

Pretty solid synopsis.  Will add Crandall +5 or more turnovers and 0 points from the field.  He has seemed to really struggle on the road.  The point about Baldwin and McDermott is spot on.  When they are off, they are WAY off.

Won't disagree with any of this.  I'll add one more

UND will go far if they rebound well (12-1 when they win the battle of the boards)

UND will be bounced early if they don't (3-13 when they don't)

Surprised Sanders made second team missing almost 40% of conference games.

Yanku from NAU has a case for being snubbed.

I don't think Drick did do enough to stand out (10.9 / 8.7), especially at the end of conference play.  Bliznyuk from EWU (12.4 / 7.8 / 3.4) and Kaluna for NAU (12.9 / 7.1) had lines that were no pretty equivalent to Drick.
