They mentioned on NHL network last night that BOS offered 6 years somewhere around $5.5 AAV to Hamilton, and he ended up signing for 6 and $5.75AAV with Calgary.  It's possible the writing was on the wall that Dougie was looking for a change and they got what they could.  The money wasn't that far apart.

Add in Canadian taxes and he's losing money.

Yes, it sounds like there was more to the story, and maybe Sweeney's hands were tied.  In Hamilton's press conference in Calgary he was asked about him leaving Boston and he didn't want to comment about it.  Another reporter then gave him the change to shoot down rumors that he wanted out, and he wouldn't comment.

I would have hoped that Sweeney would have shopped him around a bit more to see what else he could have gotten, but it looks like he may have been handcuffed a bit on this.

The NHL on SiriusXM guys were speculating that Dougie didn't fit into the room in BOS.

Oh, really? Sounds like the typical response for every Bruin leaving town.

That actually came from another NHL GM, not from the Bruins...

Not impressed. Not what PIT needed.

Agreed, but DaveK will be happy.

Toronto has to be elated to get rid of Kessel.  Good luck, Pittsburgh.

How did the Wild let that former Goldie slip away? :D

I'm as stunned as you are!

As am I.  But I suppose they have a former Sioux and Badger eating up any salary that they'd have for Kessel!

Crosby, Malkin, Kessel: That's just short of $25 million tied up from now through 2021-22.

(And TOR is eating some of Kessel's or it'd be over $26 million!)

Red Wings sign Mike Green to 3 year contract. The Wings are going to be back this year. They finally have an offensive defenseman.

You know, that just might be the right fit for Green and DET.

Finally! They haven't really had one since Brian Rafalski retired.

Ralalski and Lidstrom. I also like the re-signing of Brendan Smith. He will be allowed to use his offensive skills more with Jeff Blashill. The Wings are also close to signing Brad Richards.

Yea, that Lidstrom guy was OK too.

Oshie heading to the Capitals via trade. In a related story, jimdahl was first in line this afternoon to buy a new jersey.

Chorney there as well. Least a familiar face for each in the transition.

Today's "Good, Bad, and Ugly":

Good: Saad gets 6 years at $6 million per. I think that'll be a good deal before it's over.

Bad: Ward goes from WAS to SJS for under $3.5 million per. He's a victim of the cap. Bad for him.

Ugly: BUF gives O'Reilly 7 years at $7.5 million per. That's just ugly. I don't believe he's worth that, and it sets a very expensive precedent when they try to sign Eichel again in 3 years.
