fightingsioux4life
I have a problem with UNDs mediocrity. I just don't blame it on NDSU. At least not directly. Its like a bunch of nerds/overweight guys (division 2) sitting at a table when all of a sudden one guy (NDSU) declares, "Im gonna lose weight and talk to hot chicks." While the other kids (UND and USD) laugh, ridicule, and say "yeah right whatever. Good luck (rolls eyes)". They are dating the cheerleader. UND is on the treadmill. UND inability to lead ("its ok we have hockey") has put themselves in this situation. These things start to change the culture of an institution. NDSU football won back to back FCS championships with two different coaches. NDSU men's basketball went to back to back NCAA tournament appearances with two different coaches. These things don't happen overnight. Its been over a decade in the making. I don't blame NDSU for wanting to better themselves and then blame that for why I can't date a cheerleader. Having a strong NDSU pushes UND to do better. How UND decides to react is up to it fans and administration. (Where's the Betty's video board? - this is a microcosm of the differences). I am not blaming NDSU for bettering themselves, I am simply pointing out that our mediocrity combined with their success will make our task that much harder. It is our own fault, I get that. But comparing UND to NDSU is as good of an apples to apples comparison as there is. If you have a better one, please share it with us. And I agree with you on your last point; it is time the fan base and the administration (Faison, I am talking to you) stop putting up with this mediocrity (which started with our crappy transition) and start demanding the excellence we used to experience around here. I have been ranting about that for a couple of years and all I get from the "ducky and bunny" crowd on here is static.
nodakhoops
If you really think NDSU's success, coupled with our mediocrity (not to mention an apathetic attitude towards that mediocrity) isn't a problem, then you are simply not paying attention. But if you want to continue believing that, go right on ahead. At least you will sleep well. I couldn't agree with this more. Recruiting is one thing but fan interest is another. With them opening a new arena if NDSU Basketball keeps making NCAAs and noise in the NCAA tourney every year it could potentially pass UND Hockey for fan interest like their football already has. Some will laugh at that, but UND fans laughed at that comment about NDSU football 3 years ago. I go all over this state, and I hate to say it but NDSU football is the biggest deal in the state by far. When they moved up to D2 in 2003 UND Hockey and Football were easily the two biggest sports in the state followed by SU football UND MBB (Beasley years) UND/SU wbb, then NDSU MBB. NDSU MBB was not a very good D2 program for those that remember. Fast forward 12 years and it's amazing how much has changed. UND has a lot work to do in FB & BB. They need to invest the money b/c its clear to me after watching NDSU the last 6 years what the return could be. FB is on the upswing, but like I've mentioned UND needs to have a facility plan for BBall asap. They are losing ground on all 3 dakota schools. Side note - great game by both teams, and great job by the ND boys (Jacobson & Werner)
bincitysioux
I am so sick of the Bison already. Win this, win that, blah, blah, blah. I'd really, really like to know how they do it. I think the main thing is they generally don't hire inept coaches, and when they do, they don't keep them around for extended periods. Also, the climate in Fargo is less of a factor because it is closer to the equator........

Cratter
It isn't luck, it's having an athletic department and an administration that values and demands excellence in whatever sport they have chosen to sponsor. The sort of mediocrity with our MBB team would not be tolerated at NDSU. Triple the intolerance level for FB. Craig Bohl would probably have lost his job if he didn't pull off the quick turnaround after the 3-8 debacle in 2009. In Grand Forks, he would have gotten a contract extension and way too much rope to hang himself and the program with. This hockey-only attitude might have worked in Division II, but it simply will not cut it in Division I. If Bubba doesn't get what he needs in the next couple of years, if Brewster doesn't get what he needs in the next couple of years, if Jones is allowed to continue burying the MBB program in mediocrity, this sorry state of affairs will continue, if not get worse. As Scott Miller would say, "My oh My!" And I agree with you on this stuff too. We're all fighting the same cause. One day there might be two North Dakota schools in March Madness. Now that'd be cool. sioux24/7
One thing that I noticed about NDSU that I like is that they all wear the same shoes. It's a small thing but makes them seem like more of a team. We have players wearing all kinds of different shoes. Really not a huge deal just something I noticed. Also, the climate in Fargo is less of a factor because it is closer to the equator........One half-hearted PC search for a MBB coach and no search for a FB coach (settling for the easy road when Bubba had already left). That the difference. NDSU always seems to have a coach in waiting, and if not, their willing to spend. Look at Wanless and Sac State. He finally got Katz, who can coach, and look what has happened to that program: a school that never won before in DI. An AD always has to have an idea of who would replace a coach if he leaves, commits fraud etc, dies. If the AD doesn't have a list, he should not have his job. Cratter
Here's what I wrote in 2002 the day NDSU declared Division I. ...and we all know eventually UND will follow. Instead the GF Herald runs opeds about how UND should stay Division II. Then UND fans were split on if we should go or not on this message board. http://forum.siouxsports.com/topic/1472-should-und-go-division-i/?mode=show Is UND still doing damage control? There were a lot of naysayers back then. (Not me though -TheSiouxFan) http://forum.siouxsports.com/topic/256-ndsu-decides-to-move-to-d-i/ UND will soon be getting a video board in the betty I'm sure because NDSU will soon be getting a nice one. Couldn't agree more - starts at the top with Kelly - really kicks into gear with a series of poor AD's leading down to Faison (Bunning for example) - which leads to poor hiring decisions on a shoestring budget and the icing on the cake here is the duckys and bunnys crowd who are very happy eating crap from NDSU and aspiring to be very average. I'm convinced nothing will happen to improve things until there is an uprising of fans, and I am doubtful that we have the collective will. I'm writing Faison and Kelly tonight (again). I don't care how many hockey committees Faison is on, he needs to tend to business here. This is the most frustrating stretch overall I have had in many years of being a Sioux fan.

darell1976
You must really suck at chess because you are not seeing the whole board. Every time NDSU does something like this, ESPN starts slobbering over them (again). The in-state media machine they have built [KFGO and the insufferable Scott "My Oh My" Miller, WDAY (UND's so-called "flagship" station) and KVLY (still annoying even without Jamal Spencer's insufferable brownnosing of NDSU)] will be kicked into overdrive (again). And every causal sports fan and potential future basketball/football prospect will be watching all this and will probably forget that UND is even classified as Division I in all sports. So yes, to answer your sarcastic, smarmy little comment, we are worse off because NDSU won tonight. ^^^^^this!!! NDSU will be front page news from now until they lose in the dance. Redneksioux
Great will be downtown minneapolis again for the frozen face off and will see more welcome ndsu fan signs than go Sioux signs....AGAIN:/ This is getting very sickening. MafiaMan
NDSU did everything it possibly could have in the last 2:00 in that game to choke it away and still won. 5 seconds left, down by 1, and the best you can come up with is chucking up an off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer? Last year's official party line in Grand Forks was that UND beat NDSU head-to-head so the Bison A) going to the NCAA tournament wasn't a big deal and B) beating Oklahoma in the first round of the tournament was even less of a big deal. What's UND going to hang its hat on this time around?
Oxbow6
Congrats to SU...again. For some, especially those to the south, winning does NOT get old apparently as compared to some at and associated with UND who are just grateful that 18-21 kids on their athletic teams are trying their best and having fun. These same folks are eagerly waiting to dole out green participation ribbons as well. NDSU ...back to the Big Dance after a 4-peat in FB. UND...least we have BJ and BF...and of course hockey. I think it's plain to see, all things considered, it's about a draw as far as athletics are concerned at the 2 schools.
UND92,96
Jacobson will probably a POY for the Slummit before he's done. Richman appears to be an upgrade over Phillips, as Ohio struggled in the MAC. ORU, IPFW, and Denver should be the powers in the Slummit. They pulled a Weber St this year though. Jacobson is the one other player on their roster who looks like he could be something, but when I watch him play I still see the kid who was outplayed by Mack Arvidson of Red River in the state tournament a few years ago. Seriously, NDSU returned one good player, and one defensive specialist from last year, and that's it. And they didn't really add much of anything, other than Jacobson coming off his redshirt year. And they have no depth, or real post presence on offense. But they do have a more than competent coach. Funny what that can overcome. A Twin Cities perspective: The mindshare that UND has lost to NDSU in MSP in the last decade is staggering. Football and basketball success, better marketing, and to a degree the realignment of collegiate hockey, amongest other things have created a perfect s--tstorm. On the campus life front, NDSU is also eating UND's lunch with the campus tours, residence halls, etc. Wilkerson hasn't changed in 25 years from the sound of it. We are in dire need of leadership right now.

I am not blaming the hockey program itself, I am blaming UND's administration and athletic department for only caring about hockey and putting all non-hockey sports on the back-burner when it comes to allocating resources, marketing and so on. I am proud of our hockey program and I am a season ticket holder in REA. But I am also a season ticket holder for FB in the Alerus Center and if Bubba gets treated like a red-headed stepchild like Lennon was, he will struggle to take the program where he wants to take it. That is what I was criticizing.

Whether it's because of great coaching, underrated players, or just plain old luck. NDSU is in the big dance for the second year in a row, and will reap the publicity and recruiting benefits that come with it. Whining about it isn't going to help UND make up lost ground.
