MSU let's their two women club teams practice in the same rink as the men's:  Munn.  It's a totally different atmosphere than Michigan, which wants a separate rink for women before they would start women's hockey.

Why would Michigan St add women's hockey if it meant conference games against Mercyhurst and Lindenwood?  A:  They are waiting for another Big Ten team and have women's hockey as filler on the Big Ten Network.   MSU isn't going to start at a level that is less than the Big Ten.

All of Michigan States' club teams play at Munn.

But with you saying

Then why would Michigan State wait for Red Berenson to retire (which I still don't get why that matters for Michigan Women's hockey other than you implying Red has so much pull in the UM athletic department that he can tell them a women's team can't play in the same arena... which just screams Title 9 issues).

The Big 10 would already have MN, Wisco, Iowa, Penn State and Ohio State in your prophecy but apparently MSU is going to wait until Michigan can play too?

Red has said why doesn't Michigan play women's hockey, so he's not to blame for no women's team at Michigan.

Michigan is the most logical candidate.  But any other Big Ten school would do.  Understand yet?

That what I wrote, pertaining to women's club teams.  Michigan thinks it's arena is reserved for the men's varsity.

Doing a quick google search, the Michigan women's hockey team plays their home games at Yost.  How is that a different atmosphere?  Outside of the school charging the club team to use the ice, as is standard for any club team that isn't a varsity sport.

The article you posted says it's not impossible to have both men and women at Yost (as evidenced by the women's club team playing at Yost) but it's preferred to have two arenas.  I'm sure it's preferred everywhere.

I'm just getting mixed up over which one of the random predictions you've made in here over the past day will come true.  Is it Iowa going D1 or Michigan State and Michigan?  Or Arizona State?  I guess if you throw enough stuff at the wall, something will stick.

In the Michigan student article posted, Michigan wants a separate facility for womens hockey, which makes it much harder to start.  They picked started water polo over women's hockey because of the start up costs.

In 1997.  And Red retiring changes that how?

Mike Ilitch, owner of the Detroit Red Wings, is donating at least $40 million for a new campus of Wayne St to be located in the arena district which Ilitich is building.  Wayne St's new digs will house the Mike Ilitch School of Business for Wayne St, which has 4500 students.  Ilitch is redeveloping more than 250 blocks as part of his plan for a new 20k arena, making a new destination for entertainment, business, education, and living spaces.  If there's a practice arena with a few thousand seats, Wayne St could easily resurrect hockey, as Wayne St never had a permanent rink.

USCHO piece on Illinois players leaving due to no D1 teams.

 http://www.uscho.com/2015/11/24/theyre-leaving-home-illinois-produces-many-college-players-but-has-no-division-i-team/

Sounds like the two B1G schools are not looking to add hockey even with a donor.

They could have brought up Illinois State University as a school to potentially to move to NCAA D1. They have a big enough arena that they do share with the Bloomington Thunder (USHL) and an on campus arena to use for practice. ISU just moved up this year to ACHA D1.
