The FCS championship game will probably have better or similar ratings than about 3 or 4 of the lesser bowls. As has been stated, bowl game viewership is generally much greater than the FCS championship game, and it's really not even close.

Regarding WIU: I'd like to amend this quote from a month ago to "D2 or non-scholarship FCS (Pioneer)". Would be interesting to see what Patty V's next move is if this comes to fruition. Cratter
It was time for my quarterly period to visit the Idaho Vandals Message board and I ran across this gem: Quote North Dakota State is in the midst of one of the most epic championship runs in sports history and nobody even knows about it; that's all one needs to know about the FCS division. Quote Jacksonville State has been begging for a Sun Belt invite for years. They rank somewhere between Eastern Kentucky and Liberty in probability. Idaho got nearly $2.5 mill more from FBS than they would get from FCS: $1.1 mill from Auburn, $1.0 mill from USC, and $1.0 mill from the CFP. In FCS, they could still have guarantee games, but at a third the price.

Well, if they don't mind finishing 1-10 or 2-9 every year, getting blown out by 20 or 30 points multiple times every year and having bad home crowds every year, then by all means stay in FBS. Of course, the Big Sky might finally tell them to either bring FB on board or get out, so that will put them in a tough position. Sometimes, being a UND fan feels pretty good. SWSiouxMN
So how does the latest NCAA ruling on allowing conferences with less than 12 members, provided they play a round-robin schedule, mean for Idaho?

The Sun Belt doesn't seem to want a CCG, because they don't have large traveling fan bases, don't have a site for a game, and a network would pay not much for it. The Big 12 on the other hand can get megabucks. The Belt needed Idaho and NMSU as an insurance policy against further poaching and for having enough teams to transition App St and Ga So properly. Having Idaho win the western division would be a disaster if it had a CCG because Idaho fans wouldn't fly east on short notice and a eastern team fans wouldn't go west on one weeks notice. Idaho served it's purpose in the Belt and it's going to be dumped, IMHO. To stay, Idaho would probably have to give a bigger travel allowance than the $1 mill it gets from the CFP for being in the Sun Belt. It's better for Idaho to move on than stay in a situation that turns off casual fans, like playing in a conference where teams are more than 2000 miles away. NMSU might have more of a chance at staying, but not much.
SiouxVolley
Forgot to mention the G5 conferences get bonuses for where they fall in FBS SOS. The Sun Belt finished last in both years so far of the CFP so they missed out on dollars Last year they were edged by the MAC, and this year by the CUSA, so they finished last both years. Without Idaho and NMSU, the Belt would have finished higher and therefore gotten more CFP money. If Idaho or NMSU was an emerging powers, things might be different. Couple that with the expensive flights to get to Moscow and Las Cruces (compared to bus trips for many Sun Belt schools), and you have compelling arguments to dump them. If a Sun Belt team is going to travel to the Northwest, better to get paid a million dollars than to go as a conference trip with no reimbursement. The Presidents will vote their pocketbooks, and won't support charitable organizations when times are tight.
SiouxVolley
Google Sean Kramer Spokane Spear Idaho for a great link. (cant link today) In a blog post, Idaho AD Spear shows an FBS map of teams and points out the absence of FBS teams in Montana and the Dakotas. HE states that Idaho will be striving to connect with those state in the future.

Long term, this map I think this is very revealing. Look at this void right now. Montana, the Dakotas, eventually I think you will see something here and that’s where Idaho strives to be at some points of time, with schools in this region. Current NCAA rules say you can form an FBS football league with six members. It doesn’t allow you to form a brand new league, but the possibility exists to form an FBS league under the umbrella of the Big Sky … There is an opportunity awaiting the Big Sky to do something different that I think sustains the future of that league and we’re happy to be a part of that conversation. Sounds like there may be some meat in Sioux Volley's predictions.

SiouxVolley
Spear is wrong when he talks about six teams, which was the rule when the Big West was FBS. It's now eight teams. A rule change will be needed for FCS conferences to go FBS, but now that the CCG has been decided, think the P5 will start pushing for it, much to the consternation of the G5. Rule probably will be changed by summer.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Longhorns take their balls and go to the ACC. Probably take Rice or Tulane with them. Longhorns think theyou are a Notre Dame. Also, the pending loss of revenue will cause the P5 to want more G5 teams so their guarantee games go lower.
SiouxVolley
My Big Sky FBS scenario includes UCDAVIS and Cal Poly moving full time to the Sky for FBS by 2018. If that happens, the Big West needs backfill. UCSD announced today that it will attempt to move to DI. Something is happening, because these conferences such as the Slummit and Big West should be stable with their numbers. The conference don't operate is a vacuum like we do - they know seismic tremors are already here.
