Notice how no officials from the WCHA ever climb the ladder to better leagues? This is a great example.. a clearly incompetent official who makes two outcome effecting calls is only suspended one week. Schmidt should be cut loose. Poor officiating will always be the case in the WCHA unless some changes are made.

Hennessy talked with someone from the USHL during an intermission during the Mankato series.

The USHL official commented on how officials there are in "trying to move up" mode and they know they are being graded at all times for promotion potential.

That is not the case in the WCHA. Too many WCHA officials see this as an end job, not a stepping stone to "the show".

That's really a shame because many WCHA players are in "trying to move up" mode and really could use that same type of official.

Exactly,

And young officials know this. Thats why the WCHA has such a hard time finding good officials because there is little chance of promotion unlike the USHL.

Back in the 1970's this phenomenon was known as the "Peter Principle" and it goes something like this: In every organization a person is promoted based on performance until he reaches a place where he is incompetent and no longer merits promotion. Seniority then prevents a demotion and the person is forever trapped in a position for which he is not competent. Time for the WCHA to break the principle.

I think Gregg Sheppard doesn't want to reset the precedent for suspending officials too harshly for poor officiating because goodness knows that it wouldn't be too long before both of his kids would be looking for work. Then again, most of their mistakes don't cost a game in and of themselves, but a series of bad calls basically achieves the same end result. Of course Brad is only a linesman at this point, but I'm sure that is only temporary.

Climb the ladder, sadly the striped clowns of the WCHA wouldn't cut it to officiate Midget AAA games here in Ontario. :D

Sorry, but as screwy as this sounds, Derek is no longer even close to the bottom of the barrel in terms of WCHA officiating.

He can't set the precedent for suspending officials because if he did, then it would reflect poorly on him. He's the one in charge, not Schmidt or Anderson.

The problem is that officials aren't held to be accountable for their own improvement and development. The league is also the problem because they have a faulty development system that stalls out officials rather than improves them. After the Bina catastrophe, McLeod thought that the problem was that there wasn't a full time head of officiating to oversee the officials. That's true enough, but hiring Greg Shepherd into the position full time was like hiring a pyromaniac to be the fire chief.

Sad but true!

What's wrong with having a pyro as a fire chief? Most are!

Thank God Schmidt didn't screw up a Sioux victory...we need them all and don't need a damn official messing things up for us. :silly:

In a sense, Schmidt's bad calls actually did hurt the Sioux........indirectly. DU got 4 points due to the screw ups where, had Schmidt got the calls right, potentially DU would've gotten 0, 2, or 3 points depending on how those two games played out. Regardless, DU got 4 points unjustly and we are in a race with them. CC was also negatively impacted as they battle with DU for the McNaughton Cup.

One thing to keep an eye on is to see where Schmidt resurfaces after his suspension. It won't be a series involving Wisconsin, or Denver...I'm guessing somewhere off the radar. Houghton?

Well, I can't imagine he would referee any game involving Wisconsin, Denver, or St. Cloud St., so figuring that those 3 play conference teams, that takes up 3 more additional teams. So, the WCHA is down to the 2 other series for each weekend. Doesn't leave much room for lee-way. He'll have to ref those teams eventually.

I think the "barrel" when it comes to refs from the WCHA, is a very shallow one. It's probably more of kids wading pool than a barrel.
