Slap Shot Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Thanks for the links Skippy - the atmosphere in the dump - has been a thread since Sunday night on GPL. I'm well are the crowd at Mecca is up and down but if you read through the DU-UM weekly series thread you'll note that most people were complimentary about the crowd's involvement last weekend. The other thread you might be referring to was about the idiots that tossed the posters onto ice and not crowd noise. Although it's no big deal either way I guess. Quote
cujo2 Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Dude you make me laugh...the #2 thread on GPL forum right now is how dead your dump was during this past week's series against Denver. #1 vs #5 and your crowd couldn't get up for that? Come on...please.....get off your horse. You calling our building a morgue is laughable because we don't have a mascot or ludicrous chants such as the alphabet spelling bee you call a "rouser"? Ahem, that was me that called the Ralph a morgue. If you are going to rip on someone at least rip on the correct individual. And yes it is my opinion that the Ralph is as quiet as a funeral parlor. I have been to games at the Ralph, Mariucci, National Concrete Center, and Midwest Wireless Center and it is my opinion that the Ralph's atmosphere is abysmal. Alas, it is just my opinion. Agree or disagree I don't really care. Quote

After reading the many pages, thank goodness somebody brought up the topic of crappy the atmosphere is at the John. I've gone to a couple games a year the past few years. Let's see, the crowd arrives halfway through the first if not later. Leaves at the ten minute mark of the third and the arena always seems to be 1/3 to 1/4 empty seats. The spelling cheer??? are you kidding me! Every other school makes fun of you for that. And the that's debatable? As if every school doesn't do that. I've sat next to the student section and had UM-TC fans ask me what the hell the students are chanting to begin the period. To hell if I know, because no one can understand them. At the MSU game in December I brought my cousin from AZ and he commented on how one section was empty. I had to tell him it was the student section. Needless to say he was disappointed about his first college hockey experience. It might have hurt that no beer is served either. Quote

Yeah, the student section needs a lot of work. It makes me mad that they only show up mid-way through the first. And the people that leave early....dont' get me started......steam starts coming out of my ears when I see that crap. The spelling cheer being made fun of by every other school......thats probably half the fun of it. Quote

kvinbe Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Regarding the atmosphere in the respective arenas, I don't have a lot to say about the opposing venues because I haven't attended enough games in them. I've only been to the Kohl Center for one game with the Sioux, and Wisconsin really does have awesome fans. Unfortunately, it tends to be canceled out by the fact that they obviously know so little about hockey. I actually felt embarassed for them. I've been to a couple of games at "the John" and it was (how shall I say this nicely?) casual at best. I found myself thinking, "If this is how the people in the supposed "State of Hockey" treat their beloved Gophers, I'd hate to see how they'd react to a non-homer event." That's just it, Minnesotans so completely believe that they are the center of all hockey existence that they even show a narcissistic-like boredom with their own team. Pretty disgraceful if you ask me. Now, about the Ralph, the problem there is that it is no longer just about hockey as it was in the old Ralph. Now, it's an event. People show up at games just to say they've been there, just to see and be seen. I'm pretty sure there is a large percentage of the crowd that believes it is at a casino rather than a hockey game. As a die-hard Sioux fan, I'd like to believe that this will change sometime soon, but I don't see it happening. In the old building, the crowd used to contribute to the team jumping all over the opponent and harrassing them into submission by the end of the first period. Not anymore, now the crowd only gets involved if there is "something to cheer about" between trips to the beer stand and photo-ops in the gift store. What we need to do is have the Wisconsin fans teach the Sioux fans how to cheer, and the Sioux fans teach the Wisconsin fans about even the most basic rules of hockey. As for the Gopher fans, they remain so insulated in their narcissistic little world of "the State of hockey" that they are unwilling to even dialogue. It's ridiculous. You hear all this stuff about "the State of Hockey" and you have to dig through the TC newspapers just to find a small morsel aboout college hockey. "State of delusion" is more like it. On second thought, I guess I have more to say than I thought. You know us Sioux fans, we have a tendency to get carried away. I hate to admit it, but sometimes we're like the Green Bay Packer fans of the college hockey world. Oops...did I just write that? I'm actually a Vikings fan. It hurts to even ponder such a comparison. Go Sioux!! This weekend: Sioux 3-1 and 5-3. Quote

cujo2 Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Anybody up for actually discussing the upcoming series? I did a little research. The last time the Gophers swept UND in Mariucci was Nov 8 & 9 of 1996. UND has not swept the Gophers in Mariucci but they did get 3 out of 4 points Nov. 11 & 12 of 2000. I would think that if UND was to get 3 points this weekend they would be elated. The last 6 years these teams split in Mariucci. I see the same for this weekend Here is how I see it: UND--Starting to build momentum and gain some confidence after some recent victories. From what I have read the DOT line is absolutely dominate. They are going to have to make things happen, force turnovers for odd-man rushes. UND's PP is pretty damn good. If UND can score on the PP they have a legit chance to take this series. Also, their defensemen need to play a strong physical game. Obviously goaltending is always the key. In said winning streak UND has given up an average of 1.08 goals/game which if that continues UND will take all 4 points this weekend. Minnesota--This team has shown that it can win a high-flying up tempo game as well as a grind-it-out game. Typically both of these teams like to play a very fast, speedy up-tempo game. IMO, this plays right into what the Gophers want to do. The PP has come back to form last weekend after an 0for23 stretch. I think the key is to shut down the vaunted DOT line and limit the shots on goal to around 25-30 range. If the Gophers can do that and stay out of the penalty box 3or 4 points should be attainable. Finally, our goaltending needs to be sharp as a tack this weekend. I do think this is a very vital series for both teams. If the Gophers sweep along with a SCSU/DU split, the Gophers will extend their lead in the WCHA race. For UND, if they sweep it will absolutly 100% springboad them for the remainder of the season. However, if they get swept then the likelyhood of them on the road for the 1st round of WCHA playoffs is a possibility. 2 Points would work but Wisconsin still has 1 more series to play. Anyway good luck to both teams. Play hard play fast play physical play hockey they way it is meant to be. Good luck to fans of both teams. Have fun but behave yourself and I don't want to hear any stories on the a-hole d-bag fans of both team's misbehaving. It is just a game for crying oooooot loud Quote

PCM Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Anybody up for actually discussing the upcoming series? Overall, that's a pretty good assessment of the two teams. I think the key is to shut down the vaunted DOT line and limit the shots on goal to around 25-30 range. If the Gophers can do that and stay out of the penalty box 3or 4 points should be attainable. I'm not sure that I'd place that much emphasis on stopping the DOT line (assuming Hakstol keeps it together, and I don't know if that's a safe assumption). That line has been great at cycling the puck for long periods of time and creating scoring chances. What it hasn't been so great at is finishing on those chances. UND is a much better team when it gets scoring from other lines and its defensemen. Part of the success the Sioux have enjoyed during their 6-1-1 run is because of the goals scored by defensemen, Bina in particular. This is a different type of defensive corps from what UND has had the past three or four seasons. It's not as big or as physical. It's more mobile with more offensive potential. Lamoureux's goaltending will be important, too. I feel as if he's on the virge of stealing some games from good teams. I'm not saying that he will, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Quote

Sioux-per Villain Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Good point but its still easier to sweep a team at home than on the road. I believe the best we Sioux fans can hope for is no break from recent tradition this year. Quote
