Basketball will always be the Red Headed Step Child at UND whenever it's compared to hockey and football.   There's only so many resources to go around I just don't see them ever sitting at the big table with the others.    I'm not bashing them, just pointing out the reality of the situation.

UND is currently KenPom 290. Sather’s second worst season in KenPom with the other being 2022 when they were 348.

Even with our record, I’m guessing the strength of the Summit and the Western Illinois loss really is hurting us?

Yeah that’s Western loss has to drag us down big time but I also would think the Winthrop win would kind of balance that a bit.

He needs more support, in terms of facilities, assistants, NIL (having better players always helps), but of course paying him more won’t make him a better coach.

It’s a convenient excuse though for those who are buddy buddy with him …

Results matter in this business. We went through the same issue with football and the inevitable outcome happened we all knew needed to happen 3+ years in advance. This feels like the same damn thing but now with basketball … good work, Chaves, you tool

Isn’t coaches job to raise nil funds

If you actually care about winning in this day and age, then yes, it is one of many head coaching responsibilities.

Many coaches are getting out of the profession as such but it is in fact now one of the responsibilities if you want to be successful.

You’re correct, unfortunately for UND MBB…

but that doesn’t mean you settle for mediocrity and just hand out extensions like candy

try find a diamond in the rough, up and comer young coach who will be the next superstar … who knows what happens

doing this Chaves extension thing doesn’t look quite as good now as it did a couple weeks ago, and it didn’t look great then either

Paul Sather is from the Greg McDermott tree of coaches! Greg is a 35+ year friend, that has been very successful.
I will take Paul any day, he comes highly recommended and has had some success at a couple of schools before UND.
Paul has also recruited very well here!
Retention has been the issue, which seems to be a trend every where.
I will make no apologies, I feel he is a good Coach here, even if the overall record isn’t what a lot of you want!
Winning isn’t easy…

Wow, don’t want to see you criticize any other coach with those low bar expectations.

Not the best we can get but I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors with the president or what the budget is

I keep seeing a few comments to ask the players what they think, I don’t think that ever works

Sather’s our coach next year, it is what it is. What’s more interesting than debating whether he should be or not I think is what’s going to happen whenever our season ends, whether that’s Friday night, Saturday, or sometime else. Who’s staying and who’s going? Mainly looking at Uelmen, A3, and the Curtis twins. Beyond that, I think it is what it is.

Those 4 need more development but I suppose their are always teams looking, that Minot state kid from Burlington looks interesting, don’t know his skill level

If A3 returns and Moore still comes here, Uleman is gone.

if Uleman stays, A3 and or Moore will decommit

book it… we won’t have all 3 of these guys year next year as PGs

Some of the lack of retention issues are due to Sather. So yes, Sather will remain, and so will mass departures after the players get to know their coach.

I’d guess most if not all of the major contributors leave and UND MBB is once again starting over for 2026-2027…

I’m obviously no sather defender but I don’t know how much of the retention issues you can put on him. Maybe a few role players his personality could have drove them away, but any all league guy is gone from any school. It’s simply money. Take the highest paid guy in the summit and I’m sure he can easily make 2 or 3 times that (if not more) at a high major

You’re probably not wrong and I’m conflicted on what I’d prefer to happen. Uelmen had a great year scoring but he’s not the typical PG, that I prefer but I think A3 is and Moore too from what I can tell.

I’m also not sure where Uelmen will go? I suppose he could go to the MVC and make okay money. I just don’t see him has a P6 guy. No one on our current roster is at this point.

Everyone knows about Treysen, but the other guys he’s lost didn’t go out and get big time dollars. There was also apparently a component of just wanting something different.

I’ll admit, because it is true, that Sather is definitely not the only issue with UND basketball. The program needs way more support for the 1000th time. Lack of NIL for basketball is hurting as much as coaching, if not more.

BJ got a bag and Tyree likely got decent bag the second time.
