Young.

One of the nation's best.

Grand Forks native.

Hockey family.

Took high school kids and beat college programs.

Way better than any "UND family member!"

He seems to have a dicey reputation so far with NTDP…at least that’s what I’ve heard.

Everyone keeps saying how Hak is too old, but if you look at the teams they say are now above us in recruiting and such. You have BC, Greg Brown 57. Minnesota Bob Motzko 63, BU Pandolfo 50, Michigan State Nightingale 45.

I don’t the age of the head coach matters as much if you have a playing style that allows for creativity. Also having younger assistants who can recruit is very very important.

Hak probably not too old; just don’t see him coming back to college hockey.

UND has a lot of spoiled fans.  Getting the next great coach is far from a sure thing.

Berry's teams almost always had a chance.  Good character, good citizens.  Good players.

Maybe the next coach will be better.

Might not be.

Spoiled?

Not being satisfied with the @#$%& show that this program has become makes us spoiled? Well then, so be it.

This isn't high school athletics.

Results matter.

Berry found that out today.

You would have to imagine conversations have been quietly going on for weeks, if not months with potential candidates. With portal opening next Sunday, is it possible a deal already in place with Hakstol?

Would make a lot of sense in my opinion.

Especially since they placed his buddy Jackson as the interim, although they might be looking for a long term David Carle type hire, which may be the way to go, because I’m not positive kids respond to Hakstol’s demeanor anymore, although recruiting for a two time NHL coach might have some cache.

Those are legitimate concerns. However, I think the right hire could mitigate some or most of this damage.

Needs to be done quickly then though.
I'm all for a national search.  But you can't let it drag on for weeks and weeks when the portal period opens in 7 days.

Sioux fans, we should fully be prepared for us to be ass next year. Guys are going to sign, and boys are transferring out. We’ll be lucky to keep our recruits.

How many players did Western turn over from last year?

Does anyone remember how long the search for Gino's replacement took?

Nick Fohr brought kids under 18 to the Ralph and beat Brad Berrys team last year (#4 in the country at the time...Jackson Blake era)

Similar to Kalen Deboer bringing Sioux Falls football to the Alerus and winning.

Fohr also beat other NCAA programs that year including whipping BU.

But UND football passed on Kalen, because he wasn't a "UND guy."

Berry was not a great coach. Great person, yes. Great passion for UND hockey, yes. But he was far from a great coach.

He had the keys to the greatest facilities, unlimited resources, unreal fan base, “all in” hockey alumni base and did not deliver. Thus, why we are where we are at today.

All doors close at some point in life and another one opens. A breath of fresh air is greatly needed.

Since UND has made a coaching change would the portal be open immediately?

We were ahead of Western last year though.  And then this year they brought in 17 new players and took it to the entire league.
We're gonna lose some players because of this coaching change, I have no doubt.
But if the new coach can recruit and can sway some studs from the portal/CHL, there's no reason that we can't see an improved UND team on the ice next year.

I am unsure of how that works exactly with the coaching change exemption.  And when does the portal period end...or does it?
Hopefully Schloss can do some digging and find that answer.

I have a hunch it might be Hak.

He would know players in the CHL and basically all leagues, but it would be nice to know if the NHL players wanted him out because they didn’t want to play for him, or if that was just rumor, because if paid players couldn’t play under him, would younger players of today? A lot has changed in the period since Hakstol was here.
