A big difference for me between Bubba and Schmidt, for the most part I'd say we had almost no chance to pull a big upset on the road under Bubba. Heck, we had a hard time beating teams with losing records on the road.

With Schmidt I'd say their is a realistic chance we could win each game we go into, whether home or away. Not saying we will win them all, but I think if things go our way I think we could win and pull off  more upsets on the road.

Adjusting to new defensive scheme in those big games early in the year though, is going to make it a little tougher. We'll see if we have a #1 QB that is ready to go and lead us starting at game 1, hope so!

agree.  Much more optimistic in tight games and keeping games tight.

In no way, shape or form do we deserve to be on that list. Though I think we have the potential to be on that list. Our schedule won't do us any favors in terms of climbing that list quickly, but to be the best, you have to beat the best, and UND will certainly have ample opportunity to make headway in that area, but it won't be easy.

Hopefully Schmidt get them going and gets them going quick! I can say with confidence that if UND can keep some of those big games close, I have far more confidence in someone like Schmidt than I do Bubba. I just think he will bring more energy and preparation to the team than Bubba ever did.

I guess we will see.

I mean outside of the MVFC and Big Sky who really deserves to be on the list? Southern Illinois deserves to be on this list?

Can't even say I looked that closely at the list. I'm just not prepared to say we do belong on it because I am a fan or because I see a ton of potential in this team. To deserve something, you better earn it, and this team hasn't earned anything yet.

Let's looks at last year:

- Played tough against Iowa State, but lost

-Nice win against Montana

-Ended the season with 5 straight losses including Youngstown and Indiana State.

5-7 never deserves to be in the discussion for top 25 (unless maybe you are UNI). They dug a big hole, now they have to get out of it. I for one absolutely think they can get it done and that it doesn't all need to happen in the first season. There are some exciting things happening with recruiting, facilities, etc. But nobody is putting a poll together based on the potential of a 5-7 team with a new coach (unless maybe its coach prime 😂)

In general, I would say, polls don't matter anyway ... except that where you start makes it tough to move up, but if you win some key games ... nothing is off the table. I'm just excited for camp to get going so we can hear how some of these guys are looking, especially at QB.

I think we'll have some bumps in the road and some growing pains with a new coaching staff, new defense and new portal additions on the roster. But I also think we'll get better as the season goes on and might pull off a couple of upsets in the process.

"Some bumps" is just fine, just can't play D like.......image.jpeg.3f4a36d62f46ff9b2594200f66933d5e.jpeg

I think the defense will be improved, once everyone gets used to the change in scheme and the portal additions assimilate into the program.

there are schools on that list that finished worse than 5-7. they always say you have to earn it. Tell me how Youngstown State and Sacramento State "earned' it.

Or southern Illinois

Or how Northern Iowa gets credit for "quality losses" come playoff selection time.

I really do appreciate the type of coverage that Miller and UND360 deliver. They don't blow smoke, and they tell it like it is. The roster is not close is what we've gathered from them. I would really like to clarify. Not close to what? Championship caliber? 2nd Round type of team? Playoff caliber? In comparison to last year?

I'm going to fill in the gaps a bit from what I'm hoping they mean, which is not close to championship caliber. Which I think is accurate, but I think they are really undervaluing a few things.

  • State of the FCS. IMO, this will be the weakest the elite of the FCS has ever been. NDSU most likely will win it all again this year, this won't be a Top 10 team they've had in the D1 era. Each level (Top 4, Top 8, Top 15) will be the weakest it's ever been.
  • UND's off-season (compared to other MVFC teams). I think they did the best retaining starters out of any team. Fine with portal additions. Compared to previous years UND teams, this was the best off-season they've had in the portal era.
  • Coaching. This is where I'm buying the most stock. From X's and O's to team mentality. It's going to be a night and day difference. Not only is Schmidt the real deal, but I think we'll also find out that Bubba was incredibly bad at it all.
  • Defense. No detail needs to be given, really. The last 3 years have been beyond embarrassing.

Do I think they'll compete for a National Championship? Probably not, but also, we're not looking at a handful of teams that are going to be head and shoulders above the rest like we have in the past.

I also love the work Tom Miller and UND Football 360 do!!! Both do a PHENOMENAL job!!!

Another thing is that teams knew how to prepare for Bubba's teams and the strong to comparable teams did. They won't have any tape on this year's team until deeper in the season. Losses to lower tier schools are flipped (like Youngstown State and Indiana State last year) and we are 7-5, squeak out one more and we are back.

If he stays healthy, he’s easily top 10

I couldn’t agree more! Watched the replay of the NDSU game on Midco the other day and it just baffled me to why he didn’t see the field until the end of the 1st quarter. Completely different game when he is pounding the rock.

Again, I didn't look that closely at the list and I don't care what teams were on it. I'm just saying, UND was not good, what have we done to earn it apart from the offseason changes? Which I personally think will pay off big time for us! I think we will be good enough, my point was just that from the outside looking in, we have done nothing to be considered for that .

I hear what you're saying, but polls are primarily forward looking, not backward looking.  And they're great for jawboning, but not worth a whole lot else.:(

Think he had a few dings so they were trying to limit the hits. It worked out.

I agree however the guys running the podcase from their basements have proven they like to diss UND whenever possible. As I shared there are teams with worse records than us in that list - the only thing they have done to elevate themselves is on paper - and not being UND. Also agree that pre-season polls means nothing they are just filling time.
