I have no doubts why feeney left.. he spent the last three years watching and saw his whole college career going by without any meaningful playing time. How much of the lack of putting in subs is bubba and not the OC? agree 100% about last year.. feeney should have played more particularly in the blowouts. This game though.. seems like if u think romfo is the guy you have to get him game experience.. it wasn’t a blowout and was meaningful snaps. 3 Quote

It would have worked in terms of winning (which should be the only thing that matters) if UND would have converted in the red zone. "UND just limited their possessions". Good observation. This team will be 4-1 heading to Fargo. Quote

Devils Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Have to be happy with how the O line performed today. With the RBs we have the run game should definitely be a strength. Hopefully Romfo can settle down as a passer and make some strides there. If so, coupled with his scramble ability could be pretty good. We'll see. Defense looked meh. Didn't see much push or pass rush up front. First pass of the game should have been a pick if the safety turns his head around at all. Overall, handled the atmosphere well with next to no penalties or major mistakes. Bummer that Romfo got hit on the play action that got picked off, I think that might have been open if not. 3 Quote

CMSioux Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Just got home from the game. Not down on the team but as was shared the past three years, those short swing passes that Tommy made look so easy, aren't any more. Quote
Popular Post Sioux94 Posted September 1 Popular Post Posted September 1 We will see what happens next week, but the ceiling on Romfo is not very high from what I saw today. He is three years into the program, his passing isn't all of the sudden going to improve. He is a total game manager who is better at running than Tommy but isn't close to Tommy throwing. 7-5 here we come. But whomever said we will only win 4 games, please let's bet 1k on that. I do think we can game manage a win home next week at Montana though. 5 Quote

I don't think anyone is expecting him to turn into Drew Brees as a passer but we'll see if he can be serviceable. 1 Quote

Iowa State only had the ball four times in the first half, but scored on 2 of the 4 (50%): 14 points total, including scoring on the first drive in just two plays. Second half Iowa State only had the ball three times, scored one of the three, but were playing very conservative to end the game. The UND defense has plenty of work to do. With that said, the offense and special teams does too. Special teams with kicks out of bounds and missed field goal. The offense’s ability to run the ball and limit possessions was key to why the score was down (UND had a 23 play, 88 yard, 12+ minute drive!-but only 3 points), but they definitely need to improve in the red zone. It’s crucial - need touchdowns, not field goals. Game would have been different if UND offense got in the endzone when in the redzone. Need to tidy that up, but this was Romfo’s first start, it will get better. I’m optimistic for a solid outing in the Alerus versus the Griz on 9/7. Need to get the running game rolling again, capitalize in the red zone, and hit on the open passes when presented. Overall, given the importance of the defensive and offensive lines, I think we should be somewhat optimistic. UND’s offensive line, sans a couple pass protection opportunities, played very well and was a positive surprise. Defensive front stopped the run quite well, also, just couldn’t defend well on the back end. Things to look forward to, for sure. 4 Quote

For such a young team they didn't fold after the quick score. That is encouraging. We have a very good OC and OL coach. 4 Quote

I do think we can game manage a win home next week at Montana though. It was his first D1 start in front of 60,000 fans. His passing will almost certainly improve as he gets more time and more comfortable. Tommy was also never good in these games so I am going to hold out and see for now 6 Quote
sioux24/7 Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Well finally cooled down from the sun yesterday and took a scroll through this thread on the way home from Ames. Overall, we can’t be that mad with that game, right? I get no moral victories and we have to start thinking we are going to win these things but all things considered I’m feeling okay with how this season will go. Lots of positives but negatives to go along with it. The o-line is one of the huge positives. We had no idea what to expect and I’d say they showed a lot of potential especially with the push on the run game. Loved the center puking on the ball . Simon. He was too conservative. Maybe he was told to be since the QB room is thin now or maybe the reads just weren’t there. I’m not against the horizontal passing game but we have to add some verticality. Can Deng Deng add that at some point this year? Defense. Man I thought we were going to get 50 burgered after that first drive. We picked it up though. Run defense was really good. Pass defense, meh not so much. I really wonder how different the game would have been if Erkman pulls down that interception on the first play. What ifs. Montana nearly lost to Missouri State last night at home. I think we can do it next week. Hoping to see the playbook opened up a bit more. Well lubricated crowd will only help. 4 Quote
Siouxperman8 Posted September 1 Posted September 1 I was at the game yesterday. Great atmosphere and the fans were good other than a few knuckleheads on the way into the game. My thoughts - OL was pretty good in run game for 4 new starters against a big FBS team. Not as good pass protection. Liked our running backs. Seidl has some good pop. Run D was better than I've seen for a while. None of the big gashing runs we have been known to give up Romfo was decent for first game. Needs to be better and I think he will be. I didn't have much time to throw downfield and when he did we didn't have any separation. Pass D not too good. No pressure and some very good WR on the other side I was hating on the fg attempt in second half at first but a fg there gets us within 2 scores so it can be justified. Not sure why we didn't attempt a hail mary on last play of first half. Worried about a run back or strip sack and def TD maybe? Low odds of that happening so you need to take your shot there. 1 Quote

Letting the clock run out with a time out left and a punt on the 38 yard line are classic Bubba. I'm too lazy to look up the details but imagine the past 11 years with Bubba as head coach, the same rosters, same overall schemes but with someone competent managing the games. We would surely be a much better program. Bubba's game management is consistently bad - both in decision making and clock management and it is a real drag on the program. What's worse is that no way is he going to get better - absolutely no learning curve for him. 1 4 Quote
ksixpack Posted September 1 Posted September 1 it's so lackluster to watch a team that has some talent that has no chance to win big games because their QB cannot throw the ball vertically...and what is frustrating as a fan is the coaching staff knows it and manages the game accordingly... you can't win meaningful games if the coaching staff cannot trust the QB to make plays with his arm. Romfo manages the game well and runs well but it appears he can’t make big time plays/throws with his arm at this level. He’s totally a one dimensional QB that can only make plays with his legs. Other teams will realize this fast and stack the box and challenge him to throw deep; but our philosophy will not change and it will be game after game of square peg/round hole. That said, why even name Romfo the full time starter before game 1? Why not split time between Romfo and Feeney before conference play and let them battle it out in a real game and see what they both have to offer? Practice and games under the bright lights are two different animals…staff should have seen what each do in a game and maybe have a dual QB combo that utilizes both of their strengths to bolster the offense. MinnDak Posted September 1 Posted September 1 It’s Sunday morning and only 2 hours left to talk about yesterday. Huge stadium and football atmosphere. 50,000 or so fans it sounded like. They are very and rightfully proud of the facility and two different Iowa State supporters wanted is to know the importance of the facility namesake who died in a tragic game incident. Quote
