The Sicatoka Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 Today would be a good day to learn about an incoming defenseman or two* ... or three. Right-handed shot if I get a choice. *That's everyday for the last month or so ... 3 Quote

(And Pyke is a LH shot.) I'm looking for fresh produce. My guess is they'll roll those out for Persson, Berg, and Johannes over the next 48 hours to distract us from the reality of Pyke plus four for sure freshmen defensemen being all we have. Quote

Why is that an issue? Because it looks like they are going to add 3 from the portal. Also sounds like they will end up going 4 Freshman / 4 Portal on defense. 1 Freshman / 1 Portal in Goal. I really like the pipeline they have, but clearly they don't have enough. The University spends more money on their program than any other school in the country. They should not have to rely on the portal like this. Here's to hoping this off-season is just one giant reset from last year's disaster. I honestly think this is the “reset”. The roster is lopsided from F to D belittled that’s the predicament we’re in. Is that on the coaches…probably but again those guys are great and hopefully work out of it by 24-25. TBH, there’s only 2 freshman F I would bring in, no one else is ready, or of age from my angle. Croal is the closest but he won’t be drafted and allowing him to play another year of juniors, on the PP, etc would pay huge dividends down the road. Plus he’s probably going to be a 4 yr guy. He’s a bit streaky at the moment. Quote

The good news... nothing has really changed from a week ago with the few remaining "high-end" defenseman left in the portal. All still uncommitted. The bad news? Things could really start to spiral IF they start committing elsewhere. At this point, expectations for next year are completely on hold. Almost all dependent on those 3 Transfers. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 If they are doing their jobs I know of at least three cell phones that should be near melting (and plugged in while being used). Quote

Shattuck was great to this program for a while. Then Penticton provided a nice string of players too. What, Northstar Christian Academy ain't gettin' it done for ya? Kevin G Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 Well, color me disappointed. I thought by now there would have been at least two announcements for portal d-men who are so excited to continue their journey at the University of North Dakota. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal. Even if spring itself seems hopelessly distant. (Maybe they're waiting till the snow melts to make new roster announcements?) Quote

The Sicatoka Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 What's book on Keaton Pehrson of Michigan? One year left, RH D, 127 career games, 1 goal (as a freshman, ouch). Must be the "D" guy to cover all the young offense's mistakes. Quote

The Sicatoka Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 This gamble of holding out may pay off. There are a lot of names from Frozen Four teams showing up in the portal. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SQ4XmlO3FZQRk0oz28lqvw-sg7US4nQJneD7KmVewUY/edit#gid=876547355 Quote

The Sicatoka Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 The evil of the portal is going on full display for all to see. Wisconsin will pluck MSU-Mankato of recruits and select players via the portal. And the rest of us can only watch in amazed horror. Quote

I've never signed an NLI so I don't know the full extent of what they're signing, but generally isn't there an out with an NIL if a coach were to leave since you're really not only signing to play for a program, you're also signing to play for a coach? From a raw athletics point of view, NIL sucks. From a neutral point of view, NIL makes sense. You go to college as a foundation for the start of your career. For some, athletics will become their career, for some it's the academics, and for others it's the opportunity for both. If a kid has an opportunity to improve that foundation, they shouldn't be locked in anywhere and should be able to make the best choice for their future. Quote
