VandeVelde was a nonfactor, but I do like how he skates - I see a Chris Porter-type player, but haven't had the opportunity to watch him play very often so that may be an inaccurate assessment.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

IMO, the VandeVelde-Porter comparison is right on. They are about the same size and both have great speed. VandeVelde has scored quite a few goals this year, but I don't see him as a first-line type offensive threat.

It seemed like Hardwick skated about 50 of the 59 minutes and appeared as strong at the end of the game as the beginning.  We commented, as a group, that we were shocked he hasn't signed LOI with anyone.  If his play last night is any indication, I would love to see him wearing the green and white.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Didn't Hardwick have a pretty bad injury last year? That could be one reason.

to the best of my knowledge,  college's have been a little skeptical with hardwick because he did break his ankle/leg? in football last season.    if anyone can comfirm/correct that info for me.    i believe that is what happened though.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Considering the number of minutes he skated last Saturday, I am guessing he is fully healed!

Great game in MHD saturday. Probably one of the best HS games I think I've ever seen. Both schools worked really hard and Warroad seemed to even have an extra step and more scoring chances. Not really sure what happened there at the end of regulation and why they put 6 seconds back on when the whistle blew with about 3 to go. Oh well, props to Warroad for throwing one on net and getting it done. Lee seemed a little out of it, and to sound a little Lucia like, probably because he played in the WJC a couple of weeks ago. Took some bad penalties and didn't seem as aggresive as other times I've watched him. Oshie was given alot of attention, but he is quick and good on his skates. Would like to see Ammerman wearing green and white, but heard an earlier comment on another thread about him wanting to get out of Lee's shadow. Not so sure what to think about that, but oh well. Tough weekend for the Sioux too, not going to rehash anything because it has all been covered I think. And to sound a little John Madden like, I think if the Sioux just scored more goals than the other team, they would win the game.

I have been reading that Hardwick has family ties to Duluth and may go there.

Does anyone know if UND is recruiting him at all?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yes I believe UND did recruit him.

I was at the Warroad/Roseau game and over heard somebody from warroad saying that he didnt feel UND offererd him as much scholarship as he wanted, and thought he was better than what they offered.

Hardwick's older bro played for UMD. There's a strong contingent who believes that he will follow brother to UMD (I'm slightly in that boat).

Here's the way it was told to me...Blais had an offer of a 95% scholarship on the table and after Hakstol took over he didn't feel that was the direction he wanted to take so Hak had the close family friend Coach Eades give the bad news and rescind the offer. There has been some UMD talk as well as Tech and a few others. IMHO - Frankly, I think the Sioux are letting a blue-chip local slam-dunk slip through their fingers. Stock fell with broken leg during practice midway through Sophomore hockey season and lackluster Junior year recovering from leg injury but has had a definite solid season this year. A real quarterback on the blueline that can bring a devastating body.

Forum Article on Lee and VandeVelde and the NHL draft.

The midterm rankings issued Friday by the NHL's Central Scouting Service must be worth something, even if only an agent's take of 3 percent.

Several agents jockeying to represent Brian Lee made sure to inform the Moorhead senior defenseman that he was tabbed the 16th best draft-eligible skater in North America, tops among all high school players on the continent.

If not for their excitement (which was completely selfless, of course), Lee might never have known.

"It'd be awesome if I could get drafted in the first round, but it's all speculation right now," he said of the 2005 NHL Draft, which is slated for June 25-26 in Ottawa. "It'll change so much by the end."

By the end of the pre-draft season, that is, not by the end of the ongoing NHL lockout. It's anybody's guess when the latter will cease, but a quick resolution would ensure the 2005 draft take place. That would likely be in the best interest of the three Spuds - Lee (16), senior center Chris VandeVelde (68) and senior center Drew Fisher (101) - singled out by the midterm report. All are ranked higher than former Moorhead forward Brian Gifford, who was taken 85th by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2004 draft.

It's easier to impress as a high school senior skating for the top-ranked team in the State of Hockey than as a college freshman or first-year USHL player.

"Their stock could go down" prior to the 2006 draft, said Moorhead coach and former Ottawa Senators scout Dave Morinville. "And it could go up if they play well next year. Then, they'd have to perform again."

Which is eventually the name of the game, anyway.

"It ends up being a business later on," Morinville said. "You gotta perform all the time. If you want to be in the limelight and people want to watch you, you gotta perform. You can't just walk around and say, 'I'm great.' That ain't the gig."

As Lee said, it's all speculation at this point. Eighteen-year-olds have until May 1 to opt-in to the NHL draft, which allows teams to retain the rights of players for two years before a contract offer must be made.

"Obviously, it'd be great for guys like me and (Fisher) and (VandeVelde) if we could go there and possibly get drafted," said Lee, who, along with VandeVelde has committed to the University of North Dakota. "If it doesn't happen, it won't be a big deal anyway."

Might want to check into that Joe Brock kid. Not quite Okposo nor is he from a place known for hockey, but definitely worth looking into for 2006.

Matt Watkins has been picking up the slack as of late.  He is on an eight game scoring streak.  The last four games he has had 2 points in each game.

Yes, he's moved himself into 12 position overall in scoring in the BCHL. He's on a good run. A post on the BCHL message board said he had used his speed well to work the opponent's defense giving himself 2 breakaway situations. Unfortunately he didn't pot the puck on either chance, but nice to see that he has speed to burn and can use it.
