Which Miller and which half?  Or is this  a ruse?

Miller was interviewed during the halftime of the men’s basketball tonight and he said that the coach might be announced as early as Sunday

I agree with that but was reacting to the notion that a DII head coach is inherently better positioned to succeed vs. coordinator level guys from FBS level.  There is risk either way and I don't believe the narrative that the DII coach would be a safer pick.  It is going to come down to the individual, not where they coached before.

I disagree. It’s about risk management. When you hire somebody with no previous experience directly doing the job you are hiring them to now, then you are inherently taking on a greater risk. With all that said, everyone has to get a start someplace. Interviews are key.

Hiring internally for UND means you are:

A. Hiring somebody with no head coaching experience.

B. Hiring somebody who has most recently been on losing teams.

So the hypothetical is Fruechte gets hired even though he doesn't even meet the requirements of the job description listed by UND. That would be so Chavez doing Chavez things.

Ask Adam Thielen

That’s his teammate / buddy. Just like asking the current players, it’s not necessarily in UND’s best interest to base the hire on that biased opinion…

But sure, it’s a nice endorsement.

One other thought: When Rube Bjorkman stepped down as head hockey coach in 1978, the hockey program had struggled for a decade. Bjorkman was replaced by one of his assistants. We still call him Gino. And he made big changes to the program. Good changes.

Whether it would work out in this case is the big question.

So everyone on here is always asking to compare football resumes to see who actually knows ball.

But then someone with an actual legit resume says something and now it doesn’t hold any value? That doesn’t make much sense

I guess we’ll just have to disagree. For every Brian Kelly there are a lot of successful DII coaches like Don Morton, Jim Wacker or Earl Solomonson that failed when moving up to DI or DI-AA

Me neither but the Muss comparison is beyond a reach. I understand the parallels but purely with personality funding/conference affiliation and facilities we can’t compare the two at all.

And weren’t the HC, Oc, and DC all young and inexperienced? All around bad decision from the AD and whomever made that decision.

BUT what do we know about keeping the OC or DC now?

I’m kind of in shock. I shouldn’t be, since Chaves apparently is doing the most Chaves thing possible.

Like others have said, Freuchte might be the right call. I hope to see instantly a stark difference from everything Bubba. Blow up the defensive staff. Keep the critical players from entering portal. That will start building excitement. Win the portal!

Top question of Freuchte if I’m Chaves has to be if he’s scared of !@#$ canning most of the guys he worked with last year. That includes on the offensive side of the ball.

If Fruechte keeps everything the same, we might as well put Bubba back in.

Winners win. It would be nice to try hire a former head coach that actually won as a head coach. But yeah, there will always be risk.  And of course coordinators can be hired and be successful, but new found success is rare, especially when there has been years of struggle. That tends to predict what is going to happen … not sure why UND football needs to keep taking the uphill path.

Schmidt has been gone for awhile. I imagine he's a much different coach than he was the last time he was in Grand Forks.

Still runs a porous defense from what I saw of 2024 San Diego State … but maybe he just had bad players … and we should excuse his non-playoff success defenses from 2014-2019 at UND.

He’d better be more DeBoer and less Bubba.
