There are 1,066 members of the NCAA.  933 of them don't care enough about hockey to even offer it as a varsity sport at any level.

I love it that my favorite school is the biggest fish in a small pond, but again let's be realistic.

I would rather be a very large fish in a quickly growing pond than a minnow in the ocean.

Which is why I said  -  Most of Canada doesn't give a rip about US college hockey either which is saying something since they are the biggest hockey fans in the world.

59 teams a decade ago to 60 teams currently is not exactly explosive growth where I come from.

Go to WInnipeg or Toronto and ask who won the NCAA Hockey or FCS football champoinship last year. I would guess the majority of people have no idea.  Like I said before - they are similar for most of the US and even Canada.

Ask American hockey fan who won Major Junior championships last year.  Same difference.

Thanks for making my point for me.  The people directly involved care a lot - whether it is NCAA Hockey or FCS Football (or Major Junior hockey, I guess) and the rest of North America has a very passing interest.

Again - NCAA Hockey and FCS Football are similar in importance.

And -1,174 reputation points for the person who started this thread...

Yeah because clogging actual threads with this inevitable discussion that always comes up is a much better place.:silly:

While the initial posts were joking around it was in response to it being discussed off topic in the football forums. And look how fast it came up again in the football forums sending those threads off topic (he moderated them here).

Should be happy this thread exists.

Not my fault its a topic UND fans like to discuss.

People seem to forget (or ignore) that the first two of those operate as non-profits, making their tax returns are available to view online by anyone. In my experience, they have been very open in how they handle their operations and where their money goes when asked.

Do you know where to find these records?  All I found was a trade name for the Ralph.  Found the Engelstad family foundation in Nevada https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/806008137

Well, looking at the 2012 RE Foundation public records, it looks like the RE Foundation donated $37,500 to UNLV Rebel Hockey Club.  Guessing that is their club hockey team.  Very interesting.............  wonder if UNLV hockey thinks they can get RE Foundation support to help them go D1.  RE Foundations has already donated millions to the UNLV foundation every year.

Love the hockey program, very entertaining, great memories, great friends made.  But also some wildly delusional people here:

  • CFP Championship Ohio State v Oregon - 33.4M viewers
  • NCAA Basketball Final Duke v Wisconsin - 28.3M viewers
  • NCAA Hockey semi-final North Dakota v Boston U - 0.3M viewers

Yep, we're a heavyweight.  Protect the goose that's laying the golden eggs immediately!  Quickly, shutter the football and basketball programs and divert resources!

Oh, and sorry to say...NDSU-Montana FCS Kickoff got 981,000 viewers last August on a Saturday afternoon.

And one more...NDSU-Gonzaga 2 v 15 NCAA basketball tournament, 2.1M viewers, not including streaming.  It's an avalanche of data.  But don't forget about "the straw that stirs the drink!!" :silly::blink:

I was actually referring to full blown shuffleboard...  But all forms have their merits.

Croquet is easier to get in to.  It can be played almost anywhere, which assures elite athletes from all walks of life have the opportunity to play.

Full shuffleboard boasts a consistent playing surface which is nice, but limits playing options to cruise ships and Florida.  It can also attract large crowds, especially on the cruise ships, if hot chicks are playing in bikinis.

However, the possibility of dysentery and a sinking ship diminishes some of shuffleboard's advantages.

Bar Shuffleboard being subject to different sizes and surfaces just appeals to the appeal and raw human nature of the sport, like the green monster in fenway or the short porch in Yankee stadium. It challenges participants to strive various settings, including, but not limited to, variable lighting, levels of sobriety, noise levels, and surface conditions. Is there enough saw dust on the table? Is there too much? Is the table wet from spilled beer?

Have you ever seen croquet played in the rain? I didn't think so.

All the unnatural challenges push competitors to the very limit of their person, hell sometimes even past it? Many a times I have seen a frustrated player toss a bullet stone at an opponents carelessly dangled fingers to send a message. That kind of palpable intensity is something croquet could only hope to bottle up.

I just helped a friend move a bar shuffleboard machine into his basement last weekend.  Bar shuffleboard is a much better vs. croquet for the winter months in MN and ND.

Quickly growing as in how many new programs per year?

I am talking about the growth of hockey in our country, as far as the USA Hockey members.  It has been staggering.  Many of those new members will most likely get into college hockey at some point.  The more kids pick up hockey the bigger hockey becomes in the US.

What does staggering equate to? I think it'd be cool if hockey could become a truly national sport.

No matter how many hockey titles UND would win, the national attention of one NCAA BB tourney appearance would destroy that of hockey. I do think UND should be focusing even more resources to BB then FCS football but heck even FCS football would generate as much if not more attention then hockey. How many times has NDSU been on ESPN the last 5 years? How about UND? BB would give us the best bang for the $!

IMO our rank of sports to focus on should be:

1. Mens BB

2. FCS football

3. Mens hockey

Deemphasizing hockey is assinine.  You don't kill a golden goose.  Some day, UND will be in a PAC12 league with Denver and maybe Omaha.  That will pay tremendous dividends for all UND sports.
