First Big Sky championship in DIV 1 football and the team will not be getting rings is unthinkable.

Was wondering when/if this would ever rear its ugly head in a public forum....

wish it was a joke, it is confirmed! Budget cuts put rings out of the priority list. Can't believe it. They certainly deserve it and it would go a long way for recruiting and building confidence in the team.

This just in from UNDSports.com:

The University of North Dakota has announced further budget cuts to Fighting Hawks football. The changes include:

-Jerseys will no longer be supplied by UND. Players will be asked to provide their own green t-shirts.

-All but 12 helmets will be auctioned off. Players will take turns wearing the remaining ones.

-Tickets will triple in price. Refunds are not available, and the extra fee will be applied to the ticket holder's credit card.

-Home games will no longer be played at the Alerus Center, but will be moved to Farmer Pete's wheat field, a short 25 mile drive northeast of Grand Forks. Fans will be asked to bring picnic blankets, lawn chairs, or other seating. Directions available here.

-Players will no longer be given free UND apparel.

-The team will be renamed the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks Presented by Deek's Pizza: Great pizza that won't empty you're wallet.

-Leather footballs will be replaced by smaller foam footballs commonly known as "mini footballs".

We trust that this will not subtract from our fanbase, or the experience at UND football games. Single game tickets are now on sale. Fighting Hawks gear is available at Sioux Shop, the UND Book Store, and other fine retailers in Grand Forks.

Well, if they needed to make serious budget cuts, which they did, then rings would be on top of the list.  Sucks but....private donations I guess.

Pretty sure I paid for a NCC ring in the 90's.  I am not too worked up by this.

Exactly.  If these players want a "conference" championship ring they got their eye on the wrong prize.   Would rather have a T-shirt.

Did any of the other UND Teams that won BigSky this past season receive rings?

Wondering if it was across the board or based on numbers since football would probably be over 100 rings....

Not aware of any of the players being asked if they want to purchase rings, assuming you are right and the schools don't pick up the Tab. What is the norm.

These days the norm is the school picks up the tab. In 2011 the team got rings for winging the Great West because Faison made promise at the beginning of the year. They deserve rings. It would help in recruiting but our situation with the budget cuts and sports getting axed makes it very much not a normal one.

100 rings, maybe we could get a discount from the 300% mark up on jewelry.  It is a tough ask cause a lot of FB alum donate in many different areas of football needs.

The ring situation is minimal in priority but yet disappointing. The University of North Dakota's athletic department is mishandled to some degree. Yes, the budget crisis is troubling, but if funds were properly distributed, the football team would have championship rings. There are still hiccups in various corners of the athletic department, likely attributed to biased mainstays. The University of North Dakota still has work to do in terms of emulating more successful Division I athletic departments around the country.

All in all, this situation is definitely not worth jumping off the ledge for. That much is fortunate.
