Defensive Coordinator

As Tom Miller pointed out:

UND defense will have third defensive coordinator in three years. 3 straight former captain LBs. Two straight are a 2001 national champ.

Just wondering what people realistically are expecting from next year's defense? With Schmidt coming into the fold, that makes our last 3 DC's former players of Bubba. We know it will be a 3-4, and I can't imagine there will be much change in scheme, if at all will there?

What will make the defense more effective under Schmidt than it was under Kotelnicki?

Why did the defense regress so much from 2011 to 2012 under Mannausau?

Discuss..............

Addition by subtraction of a weak senior class and maybe a juco or two along with young talent will improve the defense on its own. Kotelnicki improved the defense no matter how you look at it and would have continued to do so if he had the time, unfortunately he did not. Schmidt will be just fine, especially with a defensive minded HC.

The defense will change under Schweigert/Schmidt, especially in comparison to the D Mannausau coached.

After Schweigert left, Tibesar took over. Tibesar changed/added his own personal touches to the defense which, IMO, were very good. Tibesar was aggressive and attacked the offense.

When Tibesar left, we got the infamous Mannausau/Kelling duo. They couldn't quite grasp the scheme Tibesar had installed and "dummied" it down (probably why Tibesar is in the NFL and Mannausau/Kelling is....). Kelling, as the play-caller of the two, became ultra-conservative, essentially defeating the purpose of running a 3-4. To any ex-players, he would call Stack "Grapefruit" on 3rd and 9, so you understand what I mean here. Later, the defense was even further "dummied" down to accomodate younger defenders. Instead of "Grapefruit," the call would be Stack "Stud," placing the Stud OLB "on." The secondary would then make a day or noon check based on offensive formation. Gone were "Switch," "Tampa," and "Miami."

My understanding is Kotelniki attempted to bring back the defense the way it used to be. However, I was not too impressed with the play of the D this season. Whether that was coaching or talent remains to be seen, but I got to believe if the defense is going to return to its former glory, the best one to get it there is Schweigert.

I agree that the defense played better in 2013 under Kotelnicki. I'm thinking that a big problem he had was the talent that he worked with. Is the talent going to be any better for Schmidt in a year's time? I also agree that the 2013 senior class wasn't the best we've ever seen. But it did include probably our two best defensive players in Goodman and Bennett. What LB's on the roster will be better in 2014 than they were in 2013? Serious question, and you geaux_sioux, are probably the guy that can answer it for me. Throw in the loss of Kuksa and Edwards, and it looks to me like the 4 of the best defensive players on our team won't be here in 2014.

I just want to see Labat Norberg Rich Idowu and Nelson get solid playing time. They all look the part and I've heard good things about each of them. They need to prove it on the field before I'll commit and say any of them is special like Hendrickson. I do see a lot more potential than people would think we have. This last fr class has a lot of upside at lb, it's not just Norberg.

Honestly I'm more worried about the DL. Is Carey going to be a difference maker next year? He could be a key piece. What about Cheatom after a year of training? Will Spencer Cumming lose weight and get more athletic or will someone beat him out? If the DL improves the LBs will as a result.

I'm hoping our defense improves statistically just because our offensive philosophy will change and we don't finish the year -20 in turnovers. We did nothing offensively last year to help out our defense.

In reading the SIU board it appears they made some changes to their 3-4 over the years as well so I am guessing it will be a little different. Also, if the tackling and effort don't improve next year, we will still be in trouble.

Did they have any corners?

When healthy I thought Brown played fine.. and I know everyone was on Mackey, but the secondary improved significantly when he moved back to corner.

Secondary is going to be a huge concern next year

Graduation/Other/Transfers

D. Brown

R. Cain

C. Hall

C. Kuska (injury - posted on SS he is not playing?

W. Lewis

C. Mackey

Corners:

C. Brown - heard good things about him as a fr. but has not played much.

R. Harris - played sparingly - good in run support.

T. Ivery - could be a candidate to move back to WR due to losses on that side of the ball.

D. Konowalski - have not seen him play.

SS:

J. Butler - played some last year. Have not see much from him at this point

B. Carr - OK

WS:

W. James - Special Teams

C. Reyes

I agree, it was mostly in jest though watching sometimes last year I wasn't sure if they were a secondary or an end zone escort service. Brown was our best corner but I don't think he ever came close to being as good as his potential, though a part of that was due to injuries. Mackey was boom or bust, his antics just drew more attention to him than he probably should have brought on himself. There is a lot of uncertainty in a position group that was questionable to begin with.
