And Three Affiliated makes way more on oil than on their casino. Turtle Mountain can make a claim that the GF area is in their ancestral lands, so I think it has a viable shot. It would definitely be a big benefit from Grand Forks, so I hope it becomes a reality. I could see them partnering to make problems go away.

They have to have major concerns if the door is opened to a 3rd party tribe opening a casino which would essentially put them out of business.

Redneksioux Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Casino will be on sovereign land so will avoid taxes. Because of this the city has come up with an agreement to collect $855k-$1M per year. Why so little? Isn’t this amount a very tiny fraction of what would have been collected from taxes if this wasn't sovereign land?

New governor that supports the change in ND law to allow this and now former Gov. Burgum is now Sec. of the Interior. The biggest hurdle was always federal approval, that now becomes much easier with Burgum in charge of the Interior. Nah, state just shot down sports betting. We're barely removed from shopping on sabbath before church services. Feds could give two sh!ts. North Dakota lawmakers hate gambling. Still no scratch offs. Just finally got powerball "recently." But like I said before, those things don't hurt GF and Fargo because they're border towns. "We" have legal weed in our "cities" because we ain't all "true North Dakotans." ...also, 2 out of 3 ND's biggest "cities" have scratchoffs. Someday maybe "Bismarck" will realize this...

If it gets shot down, they'll collect the exact same amount as if it was built then?!
Cratter Posted February 8 Posted February 8 ND Legislation should do everything in it's power to help "underperforming" entities in its state. Swallow your pride and help the less fortunate finally. GF and Turtle Mountain are those two perspectives in their individual categories. If it fails, it's partially petty and shallowness to blame. "A, beat the little guy down so you grow more... Vs... a rising tides lifts all boats mentality."

Bismarck is so close to their casino they have/had shuttles for (my) grandparents.

The people get more job options. The visitors get more hotel and entertainment options. Downside: we can't let people decide how they want to spend their money. The other downside is when money is involved people really perk up. You: "We need more money!" Spirit Lake: "It'll take our money!" Other cities: "Hey, why they get that money and not us. Not fair!" 💰 💰 💰

Make it so casinos like this can be no closer than 85 miles from another ND casino or whatever miles it takes so devils lake doesn’t get in that mileage or Fargo to GF

What specifically has happened regarding the potential classification of sovereignty of the land or local/law enforcement not being “allowed on the land.” Being a tax exempt entity is an entirely different concept.

Brim006 Posted February 12 Posted February 12 20 hours ago, Kab said: What would brown do Step 1 - ignore all community input and popular opinion to instead just check with big dog business owner buddies in the good ole boys club Step 2 - Conspire ideas with that good ole boys club to best squash the casino plans Step 3 - if that fails, force public works to schedule 4-5 year road construction all around the casino Step 4 - if that also fails, funnel money to Fargo/Moorhead to help them build their own larger version in hopes Canadians and others bypass GF for Fargo Step 5 - if that also fails, increase GF city taxes by 550% to build another crappier casino in the Columbia mall, and to build several more banks, car washes and mattress stores. Step 6 - disband any/all road safety restrictions to ensure potato and beet farmers no longer have to have top cages on their hauling trailers to further litter the road ways with beets and potatoes in hope to deter any outside traffic anywhere in the community all together. 1 1
Walsh Hall Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Do not pass recommendation to SB2376 at the committee level considering the GF casino proposal.

forksandspoons Posted February 14 Posted February 14 I know it’s how the state government works, but why would it matter to someone from, say Dickinson or Williston, that a casino is built in Grand Forks? Ridiculous. Go into Montana and you can gamble at every gas station.
