SiouxVolley Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Isn't the US supposed to be a post-racial country? Guess it doesn't matter that Minnesota has players from Montenegro, Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain as well as a player named Love that was an Olympian. Ron Edwards, a longtime Minneapolis civil rights advocate, said he remembers a day last winter when he was watching the Wolves and the only black player on the floor was Wes Johnson, a situation he calls "somewhat disturbing." His sentiments grew stronger, he said, as he watched the team's roster grow even more white this offseason. ... Terrell calls it "scary" that the Wolves would assemble a roster almost 70 percent white in a sport so dominated by blacks. For Edwards, the numbers trouble him by the "historical view," what he calls a "nullification of diversity and a reversal of history." http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolves/176071391.html?page=all&prepage=1&c=y&refer=y http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/dish/201210/are-minnesota-timberwolves-too-white At least the players don't see it as a big deal: "Honestly, I couldn't tell you I've had more than two or three white guys on a team before," Cunningham said. "It just happened to get dealt this way. There's just as many athletic white guys on this team as there are black guys who are athletic. It's no big deal. We're here to play ball, so regardless of whether we're white or black or yellow or purple, we're going to go out and play." Quote
Oxbow6 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 One word...pathetic! Edwards is an embarrassment to the state of Mn. So does that make the Heat too black since only 2 are non-black on a roster of 15? Quote
passit_offthegoalie Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 I find the headlines really offensive. "...Pale in comparison..." "...Glaringly white..." Obvious Troll Quote
andtheHomeoftheSIOUX!! Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Player Dante Cunningham: "Day One, we were all in the elevator and I kind of looked up," he said about a crowded ride with many of his new teammates, "and I was just like, 'Where is everybody?' " Everybody, in this case, being black teammates Imagine if a white guy on the Heat said that... Quote
andtheHomeoftheSIOUX!! Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 This whole thing is ridiculous. The T-wolves aren't racist (in favor of white people). The league isn't racist (in favor of black people). Its just that there are more great black players right now so the majority of the league is black. For whatever reason, the best players Minn. could get happen to be more white folks. Who cares about color. Why the Strib wrote this huge article on a none story.... its crazy. Quote
choyt3 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Right. I'm sure Glenn Taylor issued a directive to only pursue signing white players. [facepalm] Quote

Snake Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Right. I'm sure Glenn Taylor issued a directive to only pursue signing white players. [facepalm] Heck - Glenn Taylor set his franchise behind 5 years by trying to sign Joe Smith, who is black, to an under-the-table deal. That's all the proof I need that he's oblivious to this situation. Also...they had no trouble filling the Target Center when MV3 were carrying them to the Western Conference Finals. Just win, baby! SWSiouxMN Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 I think there are other major issues that need to be dealt with in my home state that to talk about the makeup of the T-Wolves.... seriously. (facepalm) Quote
Blackheart Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Easily one of the dumbest things ever printed in the Star Tribune. (and that's saying something) Quote
JohnboyND7 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 What is this NBA you speak of? The sport's league that keeps the NHL from being relevant. In all seriousness, this is a stupid article. Dude ought to get punched. Quote
passit_offthegoalie Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 The sport's league that keeps the NHL from being relevant. Yeah, that's it. Congratulations to the NBA on being more relevant than a league that is currently locked out. Quote
dlsiouxfan Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Yeah, that's it. Congratulations to the NBA on being more relevant than a league that is currently locked out. The NBA is the primary reason the NHL is locked out right now. NHL players want NFL, NBA, MLB type salaries while their league doesn't generate revenues even close to that of the other three leagues. The NHL gets closer and closer to obscurity the longer this mess drags out. Quote

At least with the lockout more and more college kids will stay in college instead of bolting for the NHL before their junior or senior years. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 So by this writer's "logic", what that that make Seattle for letting the Sonics move to OKC? Quote
ScottM Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 So by this writer's "logic", what that that make Seattle for letting the Sonics move to OKC? So their players can openly carry guns, and not worry about pesky concealed holsters? Quote
dlsiouxfan Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 This is an incredibly dumb issue for the Star Tribune and for these community leaders to focus on. There are plenty of places in our society where discrimination against African Americans and other minorities is very real. There isn't an issue with discrimination in the Timberwolves organization or anywhere else in the NBA for that matter. I'm as liberal as they come but the leaders quoted in this article largely distract from the real issues surrounding racial discrimination in this country when they comment on trivial stuff like this. SiouxVolley Posted November 1, 2012 Author Posted November 1, 2012 The Twolves are arguably the most diverse team in the league: two Hispanics and two foreign Slavs. Foreign players have long been discrimated by the NBA, as they were traditionally viewed as soft. The problem is that all the non-American are white, so they don't count as "diverse" in the detractors eyes, even though arguably they bring more diversity than a pool of black and white Americans. Too many people, including these civil "rights" advocates are so superficial - only looling at skin color - that even their own prejudices are nakedly apparent. 1 Quote
