The non-consideration list is based on:

They are unavailable from a domain name standpoint,
They cannot be used under NCAA policy or under terms of the 2007 Consent Agreement, or
They contain profanity or other inappropriate language

They can't be serious.

"Pioneers.com" is taken today but not by DU. Would DU drop/not use their current nickname?

Miami of the NCHC's website? Not Redhawks.com but MURedhawks.com

University of Michigan's website? Wolverines.com? No ... it's mgoblue.com

Thus guaranteeing that only a name so unpopular that no one has purchased it as a domain name by 2015 can be chosen. I would hope they wouldn't be holding out for nickname.com.

Quick question. Has anyone on here ever gone to www.flickertails.com? I did a forum search but didn't find any references. Give it a try. Any other web addresses link to the same site?

It's just a redirect set up by the owner of that domain, doesn't require any cooperation from the owner of the destination domain.

For all of the conspiracy theorists, how many people think the name has already been chosen by UND?  All of this voting is just smoke and mirrors.  Did UND go and buy up all of the domains for the names that are still under consideration?  If nothing else, I believe they at least have the three names they can live with picked out already (which were submitted by UND).

My guess for the final three names will be from the following:

North Stars

Flickertails

Spirit

Nodaks

Flames

Sundogs

possibly Nokota's/Nokes...if they ever figure out it doesn't mean Nakota.

Exactly what I have been thinking.

They must think our IQs are pretty low.

Here's a fun little game you can play if you have some free time.  Go to this website http://www.tucowsdomains.com/  andsee if you can match any potential nicknames with people associated to UND.  Here's a couple I've found...

There is a Steven Light who has the domain UNDSundogs.com registered.

http://www.tucowsdomains.com/whois

http://und.edu/provost/light-bio.cfm

A Jordan Schuetlze from UND owns UNDSpirit.com

http://www.tucowsdomains.com/whois

EDIT:  Apparently the link doesn't show the information.  So when you click on the tucows link, enter UNDSundogs.com or UNDSpirit.com to see the people who own it...

I also tried the names UNDBlizzard.com, UNDmeadowlarks.com, and UNDNorthstars.com and UNDNokota.com and they are all registered to the same person.  Someone named Blake Mirzayan in Virginia who works in marketing and public relations.  I'm sure it means nothing...

According to his resume he is also currently a server at Cracker Barrel.  Nothing but a parasitic cybersquatter, most likely.

You mean someone that wants to work in marketing or public relations.  He finished college in December and had a couple of internships, but does not have a job in marketing or public relations according to his resume.  I agree that he is speculating.  Most of those domains go for $5-20 each.  He probably invested his tips from Cracker Barrel one day to buy up several names and try to make a big score.

Throw him out, still interesting to find the ones linked to someone associated with UND, the Sundogs and Spirit.

Interesting? Or panic-inducing?

Meh, at this point I don't have much faith in the process and am resigned to the fact that I will have to try to force myself to accept the new name and will most likely just refer to us as UND, North Dakota, or Sioux...

I don't think that if they were doing it on behalf of UND they would be in their personal names.

I have no idea how registration for domain names work. I would tend to agree that it's unlikely anyone associated with UND has been purchasing potential domain names. But one would have to think that UND has to be somewhat proactive. Wouldn't they at least look to purchase domain names of the three or four finalists prior to releasing those names to the public? If UND doesn't, I'm pretty sure somebody else looking to make a quick profit will.

Yep, while they're unlikely to be speculatively buying up bunches now (unless the fix really is in), it would be ridiculous of them not to snatch up the names they want BEFORE announcing the final three.

It only takes a few minutes to register a domain name.  And most of them are pretty cheap.  As tSic noted earlier today, they don't have to be the obvious names either.  NDSU uses gobison.com.  Or maybe UND will do something revolutionary and just keep the website they have, undsports.com instead of matching it to the new nickname.  That might stop all cybersquatters in their tracks.

Blake works Padilla CRT, the firm that conducted the nickname suggestion collection. (https://www.linkedin.com/in/blakehuntermirzayan). They bought up hundreds of the most popular names.

"O'Keefe also said he has been told some people, including at least one committee member, have purchased domain names with the intent of donating it to the university should that name be chosen."
