  1. I don't like the Fighting Hawks name, so I am to "get out"? And they are not booing their team. They are booing a nickname that met none of the critria of the selection committee.
  2. This piece was written in Canada a few years ago, but seems to fit here..... Another university president without a Ph.D.
  3. Done! Still interlocked, but different.
  4. https://sayanythingblog.com/entry/fighting-hawks/ l
  5. New logo. And just keep it North Dakota.
  6. The push to eradicate 'offensive' nicknames
  7. I was in Grand Forks last week and didn't find anyone who likes the new nickname. I did find a lot of people who liked the idea of no nickname and just be known as North Dakota. Unfortunately, that option was removed twice. UND will have an interim president next month who is a politician. Politicians are known for working behind the scenes to get things done for their constituents (aka big dollar folks). Perhaps there is something in the works. One can only hope, after the debacle that we have seen this year.
  8. Clearly the new nickname is not a hit at UND, at least not yet. Boos at hockey games, stakeholders not donating, etc. A few months back President Kelley said he would consider having no nickname, which we all know was lip service. I think no nickname would have won over the lack of good choices that we ended up with. Kelley is gone next month. Maybe either the interim president or the new president will listen to the stakeholders in the University rather than those who thought Hawks was a cool acronym and drop the Hawks name and the travesty we just went through. For those who say that UND has to pick a new nickname to be NCAA compliant, that has been fulfilled. UND had a vote a transitioned to a new nickname and logo. There was no requirement on how long the new nickname had to stay. For those who say what about the new logo aspect of the settlement. UND changed the interlocking ND a few years back to differentiate it from Notre Dame's logo. If you want a new logo, I have advocated a few times using a North arrow through the interlocking ND (see my avatar). And no a North arrow is not Native American imagery. It is used on maps throughout the world. Back in 2004 Marquette did something similar when the Board of Trustees decided to change the name from Warriors to Gold. There was a backlash and they had to have another series of votes, which is how they ended up with another rather bland name, Golden Eagles. Drop the Fighting Hawks name and just leave it at North Dakota.
  9. I saw in one of the threads on AGS that UND gets the recruiting leftovers from NDSU, SDSU and UNI. Thanks so much for Santiago. I'm sure that none of y'all want him.
  10. I haven't studied this whole issue or read all of the posts, but agree that UND got hosed. It is the how that has me thinking. I read that UND submitted a nice bid to host. I don't know how all of this works, but is it possinle that UND outbid some other schools upsetting the apple cart? And rather than have a fight about who hosts, they decided it best to keep UND on the outside and not have the hosting issue? Just kicking it out there.
  11. Here come your "Fighting Hawkys". Let's play Fighting Hawky! The ignorant would say that is redundant.
  12. Has anyone seen the other logo mentioned in the GFH piece?
  13. Final nickname vote to begin with no word on choosing a logo Looks like the GFH took care of that...
  14. Yes, that is why political campaigns never work. Wait, that is wrong. Campaigns do make people think and potentially change their vote.
  15. Someone needs to put all of this in the GF Herald, Fargo Forum and the Dakota Student. And there also needs to be something in there about the "Hawk" logo that is being passed around as not being reality.
  16. Road to new nickname at UND has changed several times No wonder the youth of today are not taught logic or critical thinking. The education system doesn't know what it is.
  17. I was in GF for a long weekend and talked to several people about the nickname. The owner of one downtown establishment told me that his unofficial survey of the people who came into his establishment was that Fighting Hawks was the clear choice. I talked to my cousin and he said both of his kids were voting for Fighting Hawks. Another friend asked me if I had seen the cool Fighting Hawk logo. She hadn't seen it, but heard about it. I pulled up the image off the internet and she said that she liked that one a lot. Fighting Hawks seems to be the choice of the young and the ones who like the cool logo, not that UND can use that logo anyway. According to the GFH piece this morning, the 50% majority rule is gone. A while back when the process was being discussed, I brought up the Louisiana "jungle primary", where is wide open to all of the candidates. If no one gets greater than 50% a run-off is held. In the 2014 election Mary Landrieu got the most votes in the jungle primary, but when the final election was held, she got clobbered, because there were two strong candidates from the other party that took each others votes during the jungle primary. The rules were set for this election. If no name got more than 50% of the vote, there would be a run-off between the top 2. To change the rules after the fact, is a farce. If you are going to go forward with this sham, you better plan to have a third vote, if there isn't a name that gets the 50%. Man, this group could mess up a one car parade.
  18. I predicted here back in March. I'm sticking with my prediction. I could live with either Nodaks or Roughriders, though.
  19. From the UC Davis board GDT in reference to Ratelle... "There is no getting by Area 51 for UND."
  20. UND fall enrollment ticks higher; third largest in school history: 14,951
  21. Wayne Nelson wrote a piece this morning about how he is going to vote next month and he pointed back to Fritz Pollard in 1936 when he won a bronze medal in the Berlin Olympics. After the Olympics, he came back to UND, the Nodaks.
  22. I had a friend ask me last night if North Dakota had picked a new nickname. I gave him the rundown and told him the 5 names under consideration. When I mentioned Sundogs, he said "What is that" When I explained it to him he shook his head. The only that he liked was Rough Riders, which he thought was pretty cool and had a lot of possibilities. He then told me that there was a historical marker downtown (Pensacola) with Rough Riders on it. I had a meeting downtown today anyway, so I took a picture.
