Everyone hand wringing about not getting a “high end” chl guy, how many 1st rounders have won a national title in the last 5 or so years? I think the answer is 1. It’s not about 1 player, it’s the team, the goalie and the ability to shut teams down in a 1 and done tourney. Ya think we’d learn this by now.

Davis was a +20 & had only 23 PIM in 59 games this year. Never seen him play, but these numbers suggest that he's a disciplined player.

I'm a little concerned about Carels since his season ended a few days ago and no word.

I wouldn’t expect anything on Carels for at least another week. There’s a good chance he takes a visit soon and I wouldn’t expect a decision until then.

Several guys might wait until after the Draft

Hopefully not. On Carels, Scott Wheeler said on the CHN podcast he thinks he will commit after his CHL season ends. He is the only guy that could potentially sign, imo.

One would think there are NIL negotiations taking place with some of these guys, possibly explaining some of the portal acquisitions as NIL savers?  Carels won’t be free.  Verhoff and Reschney ask for increases?

This cherry picked stat invented by schloss is meaningless. Of all the first rounders playing in the ncaa over the last 5 years more have played in the frozen four than missed it. I hope I’m wrong but everything I’ve seen since the regionals screams Berry 2.0. Out worked and severely outcoached in the frozen four, no adjustments to a power play that had been figured out since February, and now the only positive word anyone can come up with about next years commits is depth which really means we don’t have a first line and watching is gonna be not fun

…and we’ve got 3 guys that are or will be first round picks, one being a forward, along with a freshman who put up 18 goals in the toughest league, yet you don’t think we have a first line Hmmm!   Logic probably isn’t your thing.

Don’t beat yourself up; just don’t watch.  Given your assessment, why would you?  You seem old enough to control your fate—do it.  Unless you just like playing victim.

This would have been a nice pickup. 18 G 11 A last season

Would think UND would have kicked the tires on him with all the rumors about him entering the portal before the Davis commitment if he was a fit or if there was interest both ways.  Who knows.  Would be interesting to know why he wants to leave Maine.

Yeah again everything related to forwards is just confusing to me. This was brought up quite a bit last offseason that it might be a common theme for the bluebloods to leave at least one roster spot open for a CHL guy or even a later portal entry. This is why it's so surprising to me that we have filled out our forward roster for next year already. Now we sit on the sidelines and watch!

New era. I don't disagree with all of your post, since you do need a mix, different roles and of course it's not about one player, it's just incredibly important to realize that everything changed last year. IMO, it's crazy to think that this 1st rounder + teams that win the championship is going to stay in the same trajectory it was the past 5 to 10 years.

I think you can win with either philosophy.  Michigan was playing well with a lot of first round guys, while Wisconsin beat Michigan State, us, and nearly Denver with the usual Hastings experienced team that was very hard to play against.  Hopefully UND has a nice mix that can make them a contender for a while.

You didn't notice Wisconsin winning pretty much every puck battle especially in our own corners resulting in our defense being unable to break out pucks the first half of the game? The teams were both top 3 in corsi coming into the game, would you say the coach whose team was outshot 18-4 in the first did better?

It's been alluded to earlier in this thread, but in my opinion, this offseason has been very underwhelming so far.  All of the additions (transfers or new recruits, Davis) have only become available in the last month or so.  Has the devoted GM position had an appropriate ROI so far this year?  I think that's a valid question.  Getting one of the big three defenseman remaining (Carels, Rudolph, or Dupont) seem to be needed to justify having a dedicated "talent identifier" in lieu of a paid coach.  Maybe Chyzyk has alot cooking for future years, but everything that has transpired so far this offseason could've easily been completed with a traditional coaching staff.

So, did Jax lose those puck battles? The players just got beat. This happens in hockey. Playing it off as a Hastings outcoached Jax is silly.

None of us like to lose, but we didn't do it very much this season. Just settle down.

It's literally impossible to suppose this BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS.

To be sure, the returning team is more talented than an average Berry team. What I'm saying is the first line is unlikely to be an area of strength compared to say Duluth. As as15 eloquently mentioned above, Chyz was supposed to bring in players that gave us a talent advantage (at least I think that's why he was brought in). None of these new forwards appear to do that. It seems almost certain we lost or didn't participate in the battles for high end forwards, identical to Berry
