siouxweet Posted Sunday at 07:58 PM Posted Sunday at 07:58 PM Yesterday was a perfect example of what is wrong with the FCS and the FCS playoffs. That was the number 7 team in the country??? That team should not have even been in the playoffs. What were they 11-1 and who have they played outside of Kentucky, no one that was better than probably Northern Iowa. 1 Quote

Vomiting could mean dehydration too. Dehydration doesn’t normally cause vomiting but it is associated with heat related injuries starting with heat exhaustion. This is clearly a concussion. Jerry had 2 blows to the head in a relatively short period of time. He appeared disoriented when they first helped him up. He vomited shortly thereafter. Regardless of his claim that he was OK, he wasn’t. All anyone had to do was look at him sitting on the bench post injury. UND medical staff have a concussion protocol that hopefully includes pre-participation testing and a post concussion protocol. We used IMPACT protocol. All athletes in our contact sports had to complete pre-participation IMPACT testing, which a computer test that takes 20-30min. Post concussion protocol/activity doesn’t start until the athlete is symptom free. (No Headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, depression, vision issues etc.). They take a post concussion computer test and compare those results with pre-participation testing results. They must be able to perform at pre-participation level. Once they can do the that, the trainers supervise their gradual return to non-contact physical activity. Once they can do that they return to non-contact team practice activities. Only then are the allowed to return to practice without restrictions. They must have one asymptomatic full practice without restriction before cleared to play. That is the protocol we used at our high school. Never once were we pressured by a coach to clear an athlete to play that hadn’t cleared our protocol. (We had a couple of Dads tell us that was all “BS cuz they returned to play without that crap”. UND will have an approved protocol (there are a number of other protocols). I would advise Schmidt to game plan with the idea that Romfo and Sulik will be the QBs. Obviously the health of the athlete are always the top priority. 3 8 Quote

It sounds like it's a process. You can't take head injuries lightly either. They can be serious if not caught right away. 1 1 Quote

I might have said that of Harvard and Yale, yet Yale beat Youngstown. MVFC and Big Sky are the strongest FCS conferences. there are other good teams around the country. Tarlton State is going to be a challenge. They have some talented players and some speed that might give us trouble. We will need to play mistake free and have another dominating performance by our defense to win. We need to get our injured guys healed up. Getting Z back is huge. If Farmer is ready to go that would be huge. It would be great to have Kaminski ready but I’m not optimistic. I think Simon will be fine if our Oline protects him and we get our running game going. 1 3 Quote

Wish I took my impact test more seriously bad in the day I purposely did poor on the pre test cause I knew I had concussion problems from other sports. I regret it now I have headaches almost everyday now. Concussions are nothing to joke about and should be taken seriously, realistically he should be out 2 weeks. 1 2 Quote

I know Schmidt said Jerry wanted to play but I hope he wouldn’t allow that. Also someone from the training staff was with him the rest of the game. I hope my old student teaching history teacher would be smart enough to keep someone with those symptoms out of the game. Quote

And smoking used to be considered harmless or even healthy. As we learn new things, we change protocols accordingly. The ignorance of some people is truly astounding and infuriating. 1 Quote

Concussions are a serious injury and should be handled as such; however, there should be no preconceived notions here. Let the protocol play out and see what happens. I too would suspect it will be only Romfo and Sulik (and technically Etienne as playoff games don’t count towards redshirt status) on Saturday at quarterback for UND, but we shouldn’t rule out Kaminiski already. Concussions are a continuum (spectrum) injury, as most, and as such the protocol is important. Kaminski has an opportunity to still play next weekend, although low probability, but prematurely ruling him out at this juncture is unfair to the young man and his teammates, as well. Let time and the protocol play itself out. From purely a football perspective, I think Romfo deserves a chance to lead his brothers, and the 701 Moving Company and Ziebarth need to set the tone early, often, and especially late. Protect the ball offensively, average 4 ypc at the end of the game offensively, and defensively force turnovers and prevent big plays. Play good special teams, no blocks (turnovers), no big plays (no return TDs) and make PATs! Purposely didn’t say field goals as need to finish drives and score touchdowns, not field goals. All of UND’s losses this season can be tracked back to red zone inefficiency. UND wins as such and moves on to the quarterfinals if they accomplish most if not all of this … 2 2 Quote
