AlphaMikeFoxtrot
Brad's article lists a slew of WHL players projecting as 1st rounders for next summer's draft. Canadians aren't eligible for NIL money on student visas is the impression I'm under, so that may not end up being as important to college hockey after this seachange. brianvf
https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/college-hockey-opens-its-doors-to-canadian-major-junior-players?fbclid=IwY2xjawGaUSFleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHQ8S7doSILIcqDbxyONGDE3o5yxWSW3T9FWbH6R7XA0I1g2vPH4yItRYEQ_aem_7uy9NanRrIyGbhsfxiQ4-w Quote The most coveted recruit will instantly become forward Gavin McKenna, who plays for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL. McKenna is a strong candidate to go No. 1 overall in the 2026 NHL Draft. If he graduates high school this year, he could come to college in his draft year like 2024 Hobey Baker Award winner Macklin Celebrini. Quote UND is in need of forwards for next season. It loses at least five up front — Carter Wilkie, Jackson Kunz, Cameron Berg, Louis Jamernik V and Jake Schmaltz. Two committed recruits will for sure be ready to come — Colorado Avalanche pick Will Zellers and San Jose Sharks pick David Klee. Four others will be old enough to come — Ashton Schultz, Andrew O'Neill, Carson Pilgrim and Cooper Simpson — but it's unclear if any will be ready. That opens the door for UND to be especially active in recruiting forwards from the CHL.

I just learned that Canadians aren’t eligible for NIL $. That makes no sense to me. There are Canadians playing basketball….im guessing football too. None are getting NIL $? It’s not that they are getting no NIL, it’s my understanding that they are pretty restricted in what NIL deals they can take. Like they can earn $$ on their jersey/merch sales. No, this came up during the NCAA Basketball Tournament with the guy on Purdue who doesn't get NIL, but there is some loopholes that could be used

Upper Deck
My understanding is that Canadians can sign NIL deals and collect revenue but they can't promote themselves (while in the U.S.)

Players leaving before their eligibility expires might keep their commits silent longer to not find themselves further down the line chart. SiouxForever
UND should go after Sam Dickinson. First round pick of the Sharks. Already won a championship won the London Knights. Doing well this year. Kid should play college hockey for 1-2 years next to refine his game against older competition.

TwamleyShuffle
Which teams do you see as major players in getting the top Canadian WHL players? Since they can’t do as much with NIL, do we see UND as a front runner for getting top talent since we are so close to the border?
brianvf
I see us and DU being front runners for a lot of the top WHL talent.

Schools that heavily recruit Western Canada already will get the top WHL kids who want to play college hockey. UND has a very strong foothold up there. Kids up there generally don’t know a ton about college hockey, but they know UND. This also increases the pool of Manitoba (and Sask) players available to recruit, which is huge for UND recruiting due to proximity.
cberkas
Seeing another Pietila has committed to LSSU. There has been quite a few Pietila's playing college hockey. I'm guessing The Christian family is the closest to the Pietila's playing hockey or vise versa.
AlphaMikeFoxtrot
A few more overagers from MJ committed, BGSU, LSSU and UAF all getting in on it. The blue chips are staying silent so they don't get less ice time. It'll take a few years for MJ to accept their relegated status down the development pyramid. The best player I’ve seen commit is Blake Montgomery and he just left Lincoln for London. Bubs is going to make a splash here soon and it will def be from the CHL leagues.
