Ultimately, in doing it, you have to win or it means nothing, but need to learn from the past. NDSU will likely win. What will UND do? The narrative in 2004 when NDSU went up to division I (FCS) and UND stayed behind in division II was “good riddance” and “NDSU will fail”. Ultimately it started the hockey-only emphasis for UND; UND athletics has been playing catchup to NDSU athletics ever since. UND needs to be very strategic here. They need partners (South Dakota, South Dakota State, Montana, Montana State) and they need to be aggressive. They need to be willing to spend aggressively (unprecedented) athletically or risk being mitigated completely within their own state. Grand Forks is a hockey town, but North Dakota is a football state. UND needs to make the next move here, of which being patient is the likely one, but it’s not the guaranteed right one. Next move by UND is an important one. Are you suggesting UND moves to FBS cause that might be the dumbest thing I've seen on this sub. We havent even made it to a FCS national title game. As for the other sports we are technically a mid major school because of our size of your school, but spend virtually nothing on anything not Hockey or Football. This doesn't have anything to do with UND. FCS is just fine for UND, you dont move until SEC and Big18 Finnish taking the rest of the big teams then split off into there own thing then the NCAA will be asking for teams to move up and make another conference only then do you move up. 1 Quote

UND currently lacks an invitation to move to FBS and isn't likely to invest $10 million for such a transition, as far as I know. While it's not wise for UND to move up to FBS immediately, as you say, the school should closely observe the actions of regional rivals like Montana, Montana State, South Dakota State, and South Dakota regarding their football programs. FYI, prior FCS national championships don’t dictate a program's path; instead, factors like geography, politics, and funding play bigger roles. Being optimistic about NDSU's situation simply because of its location (growing Fargo) or athletic success is not solid as the financial implications of moving up are significant. I agree that understanding the evolving landscape of college football is essential for UND to avoid becoming stagnant. Don’t repeat prior mistakes. NDSU's decisions will impact UND, and it’s beneficial for UND to strategically plan its move within the next few years to better the outcome. 1 2 Quote

Until this year, it seems the prior 5 there have been more and more traction gaining on splitting the P4 and G6 with the G6 pulling the higher teams from FCS. Curious if that actually slowed down. You would have to think before committing $10 million that it seems that NCAA is currently shifting to staying status quo with FBS as the expanded CFP have given the opportunity to the G6. Quote

I don't foresee a split. The change coming is that the G6 will implement their own playoff system and will heavily curtail the bowl games. The Big Boys don't want another JMU getting into their playoff picture. 1 Quote
