Realistically, I just hope Jerry settles in sometime within the 1st half to ensure the game is competitive. Hopefully he puts together a decent full game against likely the best D he will see all year and it bolsters his confidence and solidifies his spot at QB1 right out of the gate. Dare I say 200yards and 2TDs with 1INT plus a few legit rushes that wash out his mobility "disadvantage" vs JTJ?

Maybe the best-case scenario is actually that Jerry does well enough and the game is so close throughout that they dont even dare giving JTJ a chance in this one. Solidify Jerry right off the bat, and just work on some special JTJ packages for when the O need a spark and have a good lever to pull when theyre in a funk.

Will JTJ now have to give Jerry the $50k that he got in NIL since he isn’t the starter? How does that work?

Apples and oranges I think..  Year 1 versus long term expectations. I already said I’m expecting better than 6-6 year 1.  So min 7-5 and given bubbas trajectory last year 6-6 this year would have been a pipe dream.

Not to mention UND is predicted to overall have the toughest schedule in the entire FCS. Not exactly a great combo between that and being a first year HC. 6-6 seems pretty good given both those factors honestly. For me, no matter the record, if Schmidt can show he's broken the trend of team's clearly getting worse than the competition as the year goes on, and actually shows they are outpacing the competition in improving as the year goes on, ill be happy. Good recruiting classes coming in, combined with noticable improvements from start to end, and I think it's a great sign for finally heading in the right direction.

Winning season with the toughest FCS schedule with a brand new coach just doesnt seem realistic TBH. Props to him+them if they pull it off year 1.

Anybody else remember the KO return TD that sparked the win over SU?  I do.

This is the first thing that I think of when someone says our ST suck.  I think it is fair to say the Kicking game has been below average, and the KO/Punt Return, Punt/FG Block has been above average.

Way too many Missed FGs, Short Punts and Kicks out of bounds.  This needs to improve.

It’s true that kicking definitely needs to improve. Other aspects of ST have been pretty good overall.
Also true - I am very glad that this message board and social media didn’t exist when I played at UND. I might have walked away. 😊

Yep.  Set the tone for the rest of the game!  Was thankful to see this game in person.

Bums me out. Lot of names that I think/want to be good. Deng, Fleming, Hoskins, Tai, Behymer. I suppose most of those are unknowns or have some many flashes but no consistency and that’s why I’m hopeful.

I’m high on Fleming and Deng. Maybe Hoskins too. Outside of them it’s still a work in progress. Maxon looks like a high potential guy though and I like the verbals so far so we should see improvement each year over the next three.

All we ever hear on here is how bad our kickers suck. Isn’t that right @geaux_sioux ?

Try again, buddy.

Goddamn right. It’s been a long time since we had a guy who could make 50 plus yarders with ease and also have consistency 45 and below. Elrichs showed some glimpses last year so we will see if he can blossom this year.

Well damn … there are some piss poor expectations still…

Thank God the new regime with Coach Schmidt is paced to exceed them and cure all the pessimism in this diseased culture that has been UND football …

Expectations or not - how many games do you see us winning this year?

Under theme thread and discussion has happened in last few days I think the worry about what we are going to finish at is the bottom line on quarterback choice. Jerry is choice if you’re looking at building program in future if you believe he can become quarterback that can develop into top flight quarterback in his junior and senior seasons. The problem then is we’re going to go through transition period this year where we are going experience growing pains and probably loose couple of games we should have won. If he is falling short on his development then we will see Johnson another Sophomore quarterback who by coach believes can be also quarterback of the future. Schmidt will be insulated on going this approach and  if heat gets to high he will just jettison offensive coordinator  from previous coach and higher his person giving time to build the program. The 6 and 6 mark is probably mid point what are season can be. We could end up anywhere from 4 and 8 to 8 and 4 this year.  If you look at this team we have talent and have recruited future talent but overall we are young team with a not much proven talent in skilled positions other than running back. But our running game will be dependent on quarterback play to create passing game as well supplement the running game if we are going to be successful. With this thought we may need all three quarterbacks because I think our quarterbacks are going to take beating to create passing game.  Look at last year Simon took quite pounding and we still had two good receivers in Boe and Smith out of back field. This year it going to take some time for our receivers to figure out  how to be productive. We haven’t even talked about new defense and is short on depth in key areas now to implement that defense.  I hate to say it but 6 and 6 maybe what will be improvement over last year and especially with our schedule this year. Not what people may want to hear and maybe I am wrong on where I think where this team is at but  I think this why were picked to be seventh in conference.

6-6 isn't going to help us win any recruiting battles. A winning record will send a strong message that Schmidt has this thing turned around.

6-6 Would be a disappointment.  I'm not buying the tougher schedule agreement.  We played 3 of the 4 semi Finalists last year and went 5-7.  I believe the 2 SD Schools are not going to be as good as last year and we have NDSU at home.  We will see just how hard the schedule was at the end of the year, but IMO is will not be as hard as last year when all is said and done.  This team needs to finish with a winning record and at least 1 win in the playoffs.

Good points.

Outside of just the overall record at the end of the reg season, I think another good gauge for culture change (or lack of) will be how they progress as a team throughout the season. Instead of the same old ups and downs with a general downward trend with a usual really bad loss late in the season, I hope they are at least playing their best ball of the year toward the end. And with QB1 convo included, I hope the same goes for Jerry or whoever it is at that point. I hope they progress and grow confident with a positive overall trend into the end of the year rather than struggling late.

This is something I will be watching closely.
