From the Lincoln Journal Star :

The Stars got defensive with their first two of 20 picks, seemingly getting a steal with their first-round selection of Tysen Dowzak, taken No. 9 overall.

Dowzak is a well-respected player who led Shattuck-St. Mary's (Mich.) to the Midget AAA National Championship last season. At 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, he scored eight goals and had 23 assists. He is considered a potential top-10 selection for the NHL Draft in two years.

"I don't think a lot of teams knew he was available, but we talked to him on the phone and he's excited to be coming here," Johnson said.

This could be a good thing, it looks like he's planning to play in the USHL. Maybe Sioux fans will get their wish?

No, he committed to Niagra.

I suppose he will go on to be the top player in the CHA and will probably some where along the way be a top player.

In the CHA? If Zajac went to BSU I'm sure he'd break the century mark in points. If he went to the AHA, well, he could have a season that would have been astounding but proved really nothing. Reaney didn't become a Sioux because he didn't want to walk on or get even a partial. He had full schollies on the table and he chose Niagara (Not Viagra) out of those who gave him offers (Merrimack and UAF the other two).

I guess we can scratch Ammerman and Esposito off this list. I think that Esposito would have been the best pick of this list. The next one from this list I would like to see would be Finley.

I have not seen Finley play so I cannot make a judgement on him (although his size is intriguing). However I have seen Dowzak a couple of games last year and he was quite impressive. Another that I have seen, as have many on this board, is Lamoureux who played much bigger than his size. Either of those two would be great pickups and it sounds as though we have the edge on one and may have a slight edge on the other.

I just wanted to post something since I am having hockey withdrawls already and it's been forever since I have posted anything. I hope Ammerman does well at JBSU. I really enjoyed watching him play down here in moorhead. And I also wanted to add.............GO SIOUX!!!!!!!!

If he really wanted to play for a one and done, 2006 was when I'd've committed too. If that means Dahl is gone when Jon enters JBSU's hallways, it can only mean good things.

Thanks to Paul Shaheen from the latest ROI:

Joe Finley hasn't made his D-I selection just yet, but he appears to be getting closer.

First off, the '87 born defenseman (Wing Span, ROI May 27, 2005) has earned high school senior status, and as he told ROI on Tuesday, he'll have his diploma in hand by August 1st.

That opens up the door for Finley to begin D-I play this fall. While a number of schools are still in play, Minnesota and North Dakota appear to be the two front-runners.

Why is it and how is it both the Golden Gophers and Fighting Sioux could still have scholarship money available for this fall? Injuries on the blueline could be  key. North Dakota's Robbie Bina, on tap to be a junior next year, and Minnesota senior-to-be Peter Kennedy are both dealing with injuries that could prevent them from returning next season (Bina of course, suffered a severe spinal injury during North Dakota's WCHA Final Five contest versus Denver last spring).

It's not that either player's scholarship money would be pulled per se--in fact, as a Big Ten school, Minnesota must honor whatever scholarship money Kennedy has--but Bina and Kennedy's playing status for next year, along with other factors, could avail both schools the additional dollars necessary to bring Finley into the fold. Look for an ROI follow up on Finley within the next two weeks.

Anybody have anything new or any rumors on Dowzak?  I am hoping we can get him signed pretty soon.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I heard UND had the inside track and that he could very well sign by the end of July. However, this rumor is very unsubstantiated and I am not exactly sure how reliable the source I heard this from is.

I think it is 'wait and see' type thing. I wouldn't doubt that Finley's decision could wait beyond the two weeks quoted until the CBA is signed and Joe watches what happens with Greene and/or Smaby before making a decision, if he is indeed interested in attending UND.

Pretty sure ammerman signed with St. Cloud

Yeah, that's what I said. JBSU. You may have to have someone else explain this to you. I know what it stands for, but would do injustice to a good proper definition.

"How Many Months Until Hockey . . .?"

Cripos! The first game of next season is now well closer than the last game of last season. One of the many great things about the Sioux making it to the Big Show in Columbus.

God, I hate reading about Phil Kesshole on this board.

Jan Brady State University. The Gophers and their fans are somewhat akin to Peter Brady worshiping the ground that his older, better, and smarter brother Greg walked upon. Here, the Fighting Sioux of NDU.

Then quit complaining and do something about it. North Dakota's recruits need not take a back seat to anyone's recruits so post about them.

Nice try but no, there is not a "somewhat akin" analogy to anything Brady between UND and UMN.

Five-hole,

I guess the only Brady analogy would be that MN is well established as Marcia, which would make UND Greg. So pretty much equals, except Greg was bigger, stronger and not a girl.

You guys are certainly Brady Bunch experts. Were you fans? ;)

Ya huh. Marsha (more so in the later/Mike & Greg permed hair episodes) was the predesessor to my second love, Kelly Kopowski

More from Paul Shaheen:

D Tysen Dowzak (March 8, 1988/6-5, 223)

-Humungous on foot, and larger than life on skates. Six-foot five, and still growing by all accounts. Didn't have the best of Select 17's, but it's obvious what everyone's drooling over. The former Shattuck star will skate for the USHL's Lincoln Stars this year before moving onto college in the fall of 2006, quite possibly to North Dakota. A top ten prospect for the 2006 NHL draft in many a person's mind.
