I really hope it’s not Smaby there must surely be better candidates, and in reality we need more fresh talent than the worn road of UND alums. This program needs an injection of energy and excitement.

Like Shaw? That was a disaster too.

Saying we need a non-UND guy is as dumb as saying we do need a UND guy. Just find the right guy, regardless of where he is from.

For the record, I'm not saying that is Smaby ... just more of a general statement. I was hoping for the long shot with Herter...

serious question but what do you think was wrong with Shaw?

If I recall correctly, and I could be wrong (its been known to happen a lot), wasn't he in charge of the power play and wasn't it just god awful? Not sure how much he contributed. There was a reason UND moved on from him.

Then again, maybe Berry was the problem then too...

Shaw was on the coaching staff that won a national championship, too. Who knows how good or bad he was, but you can only do so much with the skill you have to work with and there was a noticeable drop off the next couple years. If Shaw was the only problem, we wouldn't have seen more of the same over the course of the next 8 years, in my opinion.

I get the thought process of saying a guy that played a position has to coach that position but don’t you think these guys have been around the game long enough where even if they are a “trained” defenseman, they can coach a forward? I don’t know, maybe I’m naive but I think once you’ve been in the game long enough you can handle more than just your position group.

I agree. I remember guys that played for the Force when Herter was there and they often talked about how good he was at skill development stuff (and that included forwards). I know it's a pipe dream and he's probably not in the mix/didn't apply anyway, but if Herter got it, I would have zero worries that he would be able to coach forwards.

He was brought on to run our power play and the national championship team had about a 19% power play conversion. Talent dropped off in the years to follow but the fact that the power play on the 2016 team wasn’t great is pretty surprising.

Interesting. I didn't realize it wasn't higher in 2016. Easy to forget when the end result worked out. Like I said, I don't know whether he was good or bad, but I know that getting rid of him certainly didn't solve the puzzle as it's been more of the same over the last 8 years.

Didn't have Stecher and LaDue the following year, but they did have Wolanin and Poolman, along with Gersich, Boeser and Jost.  That's 5 guys that saw some time in the NHL.

Same could be said about Karl and being brought on as a goalie coach but he got to stay. Ever sense he came on board we haven't been able to develop a goalie, and we utilized the portal too often.
