But we were actually an elite program then, making the frozen four all the time.  Plenty of teams to change your mind that are contenders almost every year.  UND is not the elite program it once was, thanks to a run of mediocrity.

But what about the Penrose?;)

So if Berry is back without an extension and wins the Penrose next year but has an early exit in the NCHC and NCAA tourneys does he get a new contract?

That’s my fear.

2026: Penrose; 0 NCAA wins; but extension

2027: miss NCAAs

2028: make NCAAs, but no wins

2029: Penrose; 0 NCAA wins; extension again

2030: repeat ….

Idk, I feel a tipping point has been reached this year. The fan base is starting to understand how dysfunctional the program has gotten. And that will lead to more calls for change.

I’m not sure where all the dissatisfaction is coming from.  We’re doing better than the Rube Bjorkman years.  Be thankful for what you have is what I’d say.

Players seem to regress when they get here, Berry style of play is not what younger players want any part of and his line ups , playing older, average players over younger players with a higher ceiling. Figure out you lines before Xmas and run with them.

I remember when Berry was hired the thought was the offense would open up, boy was that thought wrong.

When they missed the tournament the next season, I was hoping that wouldn't become the norm

What a horrible comparison.  Look at the resources Berry has at his disposal for God's sake.  Maybe my sarcasm meter is on the fritz.

You’re right, of course, but I swear emojis have been the death knell for subtlety, irony and satire.  Maybe it’s for the better.  Maybe we all just need to talk straight.

Tell me if you have heard this one:

A 60-ish coach nearing end of contract whose style is "score three* and play D" and hasn't won a meaningful playoff game in a while and is slipping mid-pack while conference foes keep winning the NCAAs.

*is that 3 goals or 3 TDs

Problem is neither's teams were/are good at playing D and have a hard time getting the 3 scores

and as important as playing 200 feet and solid defense is, the world still loves offensive highlights, and the NHL wants guys who can put the puck in the net and get fans out of their seats.  Inside every team the grit, blocked shots, great routes and back pressure are revered, but scoring and playmaking are the hardest commodities to come by.  Remember for chippahs, they are still trying to become somebody.  They aren't anybody if they are a first round pick getting pucks deep and forechecking...that's a change you make when you are getting paid to make that change

To win Nattys, you need all four phases of the game (offense, defense, goaltending and special teams) to be functional.

no doubt, and to win Nattys you need a couple chippahs who think they have a chance and are allowed to play in a way to score 60 points a season at UND

The structure that Berry demands takes the skill out of these players because of playing instinctively they are robots going from point a to b to c.

Berry has lost the team.  Sounds like an absolute dumpster fire.  People wonder if him going away would hurt recruiting but at this point, for this team, him staying might hurt as much or worse.  Open discussions among players about desires to transfer out, and if that happens does that also scare away incoming recruits?
