90siouxfan
Sometimes I wonder if coach preaches a stay calm, play your game plan, do the things we do.... and it gets done to a detrimental extreme?
bcblues
WTF happened? I wasn't able to watch the game last night. Will watch replay today, but what a way to start the season.
hockeytherapy13
I really wish they would have pulled the goalie at some point within the last few minutes. At least to get some 6 on 5 practice. Thats a situation that will come about in the season and to not even take a whack at it for the sake of reps seemed like an odd coaching decision. petey23
I know it's first game and I know it is an exhibition game...blah blah blah "Tough to play against" "culture" ....blah blah blah I know it is one game, even an exhibition game at start of the season but If I am Berry last night I stop the guys wearing the C and the A's on the way to the locker room last night and simply tell them that effort is completely unacceptable and I won't have leadership that thinks it is, the room is yours...and then I go to Bonzers and send Dane and Simpson to Joe Black's.

What does this remind me of? How about a few years ago, when they were ranked top 5 pre-season, but missed the playoffs. I’m not taking it that far. But definitely a head scratcher. You’re not supposed to get beat up first exhibition of the year by a team like augustana. You’re supposed to put on a show for the fans. cberkas
UND looked like ACHA team was playing a NCAA D1 team. Leadership wasn’t there and that falls on Brad to have them prepared and to make in game adjustments. The whole “nothing to worry about the game didn’t count”, well that wasn’t Manitoba they were playing that was a D1 team. The effort last night is concerning. Still trying to wrap my mind around how an entire team can take not just a period off, but the entire game. Zmolek said afterwards that there was no energy on the bench; this isn't March & the team can't be fatigued. It's as if they weren't motivated to play. Berry said before the game that the team had excellent practices during the week, & then POOF, 60 minutes of uninspired hockey. That's what baffles me. For whatever reason, Swanson was the only player immune from whatever was affecting the team. A continuation of the regional last March in terms of disappearing for large chunks off time. And like you said, where are the in-game adjustments from the coach (ie, like calling a timeout) & the pep talks of the leaders when they're getting dominated? Do at least something to change the momentum. Providence will be the litmus test for how this team will do this year.

dustnyou
I thought Wilke and Schmaltz played hard. They were all over making plays on both ends of the ice.

Condolence's to the Demers family. https://goaugie.com/news/2024/10/4/mens-hockey-augustana-mourns-the-loss-of-coach-chad-demers.aspx It was announced at the Ralph, along with the passing of a handful of former Sioux guys, and there was a moment of silence. Indeed, Augustana might have been playing for a little more tonight and some extra motivation that had then flying around the ice compared to UND.

iramurphy
Augustana hockey is no cream puff and an amazing story. Their AD is Josh Morton who is a former UND football player. In a short period of time, he established key corporate relationships and obtained funding for a new hockey arena for a team that didn’t yet exist. He then convinced an assistant coach who had been the top recruiter for Motzko’s teams at St. Cloud and Minnesota to become their head coach. He came from Detroit Lakes where he was an outstanding RB and along with Reed Manke led an overachieving, undersized team, to a state championship in FB. He was an outstanding, albeit undersized defenseman in hockey. His Dad who played at Providence was his HS coach. Garret was as tough of a HS defenseman as I have watched. Because of his lack of size, he didn’t receive D-1 offers until after he played an extra yr of juniors when St. Cloud State signed him. By his Soph yr he was a team Captain and by the end of his career he was All-WCHA and an academic All-American. Post college he played professional hockey in Europe before joining Motzko’s staff at St. Cloud. He successfully recruited a number of “lunch pail” guys to come to Augie to start their program. They practiced together at rinks in town and lifted and conditioned at existing facilities on campus. Within just a couple of years he has put together a team that can hold their own against the top teams in college hockey. Raboin is arguably the hottest young new coach in college hockey. He is married to his HS girlfriend who is a UND grad. I would definitely have him on my list of who to consider as our next head coach the next time the position opens up (if another major program doesn’t get him first). I would also try to hire Josh Morton the next time the AD job opens up. It will be interesting to watch how Augie does this year. 1

If UND struggles this year and doesn’t even make the tournament, there needs to be serious discussion if the program/programs are going in the right direction. At that point both of the above names should warrant serious consideration. Hopefully the programs move forward and have a good year, but if not we can’t just continue stuck in the mud spinning our wheels when there are talented people out there who are moving other programs forward.
