NIL and the new NCAA

NCAA got their butts handed to them in court for trying to maintain control.  I'm of the opinion that even if the NCAA would have "got out in front" of NIL and provided some sort of payment structure to athletes years ago that there would have been at least one player to push the envelope and sue and we'd be where we are now anyway.

The only thing that is going to reign this all in is an act of Congress that will provide coverage for the NCAA from the courts.  The only other thing that can stop the NIL/transfer fiasco is if donors get tired of throwing their money away for nothing.  When the ROI doesn't pay, maybe the NIL money will dry up.  I doubt that though, there are too many big money donors that have funds to burn.

As for this kid, he should have got it in writing before he ever stepped foot in Vegas.  UNLV is going to get a rep for not acting in good faith, but at the end of this, these kids want to get paid like pros so they can get treated like pros.  Sign the contract.

Agree, he should have never stepped foot in Vegas until he got a signed contract.

However, that still doesn't change the fact that UNLV legitimately tried to scam the kid. Let's not forget that.

Did UNLV “scam” him or did the UNLV collective?

I could see in the near future that a player signs a NIL deal at "xyz school" they are there for 5 years or if they break the contract to go to the portal, they pay back the NIL that they received. Well players, you are getting what you wanted and when you start having contracts with clauses in them about transferring and how you will pay back the NIL money.

So UNLV is going to play by the old rules and pretend NIL doesn't exist? Might as well move back to Division 2.

I don’t know what actually happened but UNLV is covering their ass since they cannot be directly paying any players.  Their collective is not connected to their athletic dept.

Everyone knows that’s not true but it’s the problem with NIL.  Players and fans don’t understand it.  The kid was apparently promised something from someone with no contract tying anyone to that promise.  I’m not sure who is actually at fault the school for “making a promise” or the kid for committing their “based on any non binding promise”

From what I've seen, UNLV coaches were the ones that promised the $100k and then kept telling him it would come until it didn't.

A tweet from Carl Reed Jr says the kids family hired an agent and they feel his market value is more than UNLV is paying him and that is what is behind it.  Certainly his decision but far from his and your side of the story on this.  Truth is likely somewhere in the middle but is UNLV still at fault for “scamming” him.

His dad said the sources were wrong then deleted his whole account.

This is going to get ugly really quick at other schools if this starts happening.

Nick Saban said when he had recruits asking how much money they will make it was the end.

The almighty "free market" has been a total disaster in this situation. So what do you suggest?

It's going to take a few years to get this sorted out between the new "legal" way and the old "under the table" way.  There was clearly a disconnect in this situation, and no written contract.  I suspect that in a few years there will be a fairly standard template of contracts between the collectives/boosters and players.

I'm curious to see if the $ being raised by collectives stays the same, goes up, or goes down.  The ROI for donors has to be next to nothing.  The pool of individuals with the ability, and desire, to be pumping in high 6 or 7 figures year after year to pay for top players has to be limited.  Additionally, if all the similarly situated programs are doing the same thing it will just end up in a wash.

This is related.  Here we have another player quitting on the season to preserve his redshirt so he can transfer and get paid.  A school would be foolish to bring in players like this.  This guy is going to be on his third school now.  Very checkered history of fence jumping.

The ROI in this case isn't $$$$$, it's W's. As in wins.

But eventually when players keep jumping the fans lose interest the first instant their teams don’t get those wins.
