CMSioux Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 What about "improving the fan experience", there was decent fan participation when UND made it an event, definitely something they could build on. Now it is nothing, holding it on a Friday almost makes it seem they don't want people to come. Chaves needs to step in. 1 1 Quote

It should be a game format with a score, even if heavily controlled/scripted just so the players and fans have something to look forward to. Can’t have authentic scrimmage in HPC as it isn’t a full 120 yard field - need Alerus Center for that. And could have tailgating, video board introductions and team entrance, concessions going in concourse, halftime band entertainment, etc. Create a game-like atmoshphere to build hype for the upcoming season. *It is done around the entire country.* UND football and Bubba are still in the Stone Age. No it actually isn't "done around the country" much anymore at all. The full spring game thing is dying a slow, painful death. To the point that any inclement weather at all will cancel the game completely - that's how important they are. Teams that make money have no problem with them, others do them cause they feel they have to and then the actual spring game itself turns out to be the most boring event ever. 2 Quote

It is hyped up AROUND THE COUNTRY far more than UND does. If you compare Spring Games to actual games in the fall, then of course the events are boring, but that completely misses the point I just made and is pure deflection on your part. With spring ball, it is all relative. If you go to Minneapolis, Madison, Lincoln or even Brookings or Fargo and compare it to what UND does, then you would see how far behind the times UND is. Quote
nodak651 Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 At least there is some coverage. From UND's website: "While the practice will not be televised or streamed, fans can tune into the action with Jack Michaels, Mike Berg, and Paul Ralston from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on 1440-AM in Grand Forks and 790-AM/94.1-FM in Fargo. University of North Dakota television partner, MidcoSN, will produce and air its award-winning series "Day by Day" following the night's events" Quote

UND isn't behind the times, they were actually ahead of the times for years, putting on a big event in the Alerus. They purposely chose to make it less of an event for whatever reason. That isn't 'behind the times'. The times show that the event itself is dying if you would bother to look around. Quote

Northwestern doesn’t hold a spring game at all. Wisconsin’s was canceled due to weather in 2018 and this year the Badgers aren’t having a traditional spring game, opting instead for an open practice to close out the spring session. Iowa is having turf replaced currently so there is no spring game. Time will tell if they reinstitute it next year or follow the Badgers’ lead of not going back. Ohio State is having a spring game this weekend — like NU’s it’s being televised on BTN — but it will feature no live tackling. The Buckeyes instead will "thud it up," head coach Ryan Day told reporters there. Minnesota has attempted to hold a spring game, but it’s been disrupted by injuries, weather or, this spring, both, for three straight years under P.J. Fleck." 1 Quote

Your PJ Fleck statement doesnt mean anything. Look at the above link I posted to see what they are ACTUALLY scheduling. And yes, the above schools are scaling back, and yet their events are far larger and more hyped than UND’s. You failed to mention the FCS competition, including NDSU and SDSU - they are doing more than UND. You can defend Bubba all you want, but it’s clear UND is taking the easy way out for spring ball and it is does NOT compare to what the national standard is, despite the limited examples you included. Last I checked UND is an FCS school, so are NDSU and SDSU. Your article was focused on FBS Big 10, but even so, it stated “SOME spring games are dying” while others (in this case Nebraska) are growing. Seems to be making the case it’s status quo overall. In fact, the opening line reads “Nebraska’s Red-White Spring Game has never been stronger.” Not exactly justifying what UND is doing for spring football (or rather NOT doing). Quote

I would simply recommend education for you. You twist a story to fit your biases quite nicely, I’ll give you that. Removing contact to make spring games safer is wonderful but does not justify de-escalating the hype sourrounding the game. Period. Quote

From the SDSU article. So why beat each other up? Heavily controlled will mean quick whistles and very little contact. Extremely controlled. Can get the same from a practice type scenario. Practice usually includes some type of 11 on 11 anyway. Better to work on fundamentals at this point? Quote

The first line I typed that started this forum fiasco: It should be a game format with a score, even if heavily controlled/scripted just so the players and fans have something to look forward to.
