I guess if you read the letter of the job description it’s either Caruso or a D2 guy

Chaves historically hires D2 head coach, going back to Beau Baldwin at EWU and most recently Paul Sather at UND.
I’d guess it will be a Midwest D2 coach or the lazy (and risky) move of Fruechte being promoted.

Hoffner beat Bolte today, maybe Hoffner?

From the very beginning (see my earlier posts), Schmidt has been the favorite. Too much fraternity support and now fundraising. It’s basically a hiring similar to Bubba - UND ties and is familiar to alumni. Justification used is it is “DeBoer’s guy” , although he’s not working for him anymore and cut ties … UND going with Schmidt could work, but could be mediocrity like with Bubba. We will see.

Fruechte has 7 years coaching experience.

The minimum number of years required in the job posting is 8.

It's almost like they did that to send a message that they are going external.

Everyone knows in job descriptions that years of experience is just a recommendation and not a requirement. And it’s not like he has 2 total years of experience. He’s off by 1 year. He will get a legit look

It is listed as a minimum requirement, not a preferred requirement.

I still think they would have announced it already if they wanted to go with Fruechte.

Mediocrity is a potential outcome regardless of who is hired.  I personally don't believe that going with a DII head coach has a higher probability of success vs. hiring any of the guys being discussed that have coached at the FBS level.

Baldwin had one year of HC experience at D2 level after leaving EWU, where he was the OC for 4 years.  It was literally an inbred hire that we all despise.

Every great coach started somewhere.

Brian Kelly went from GVSU to Central Michigan to Cincinnati to Notre Dame to LSU.

Don't immediately dismiss a candidate because they coach a lower level of FB.

I agree with that but was reacting to the notion that a DII head coach is inherently better positioned to succeed vs. coordinator level guys from FBS level.  There is risk either way and I don't believe the narrative that the DII coach would be a safer pick.  It is going to come down to the individual, not where they coached before.

That's a fair take. I am just anxious to inject some energy into this program.

What type of staff the new coach can assemble and what excitement they can bring to drive NIL are more important to me than any head coaching experience.  Experience with how FBS schools are doing it weighs heavier to me than how Bemidji and Mankato are doing it.

Went back and read it you’re right, it’s more of a plea

Correct, I would be shocked if that is the number.

I just don't like the idea of an internal hire.

Me neither but the Muss comparison is beyond a reach. I understand the parallels but purely with personality funding/conference affiliation and facilities we can’t compare the two at all.

You are right. I am just beyond frustrated with this program and the whole athletic department in general. We must get this right.

It just seems like it is going to be - Fruechte.  I don't know if that is good or bad.  Miller was interviewed at half and he thought that it could be announced as soon as tomorrow.

I had $300k in mind. Coordinators around $125k. I want the proper investment made.

That’s the one thing everyone on this board agrees on
