you do wonder if fruchte and oline guy were told......

bubba does well..(playoffs and whatnot) your good to go for a few years and potentially take over if bubba retires.....

or...if bubba doesn't do well we'll move him upstairs (or fired) and fruchte your the new coach and oline guy your good too?

if those guys get let go what a shame to move your family and leave a nice job in winona for a one year wipeout ....

My belief - if we got the 3 yards on the 2 point conversion at Youngstown, Bubba is still coaching.  They win and go into the next week with momentum and beat ISU blue. That alone would have gotten us to 7-5. Then it comes down to beating either USD or Illinois St for a very successful season.   It is amazing what a difference one play can make.

UND would have still choked it away in the playoffs. Defense was still awful. Let’s not pretend the Bubba tenure (2014-2024) or the 2024 team was something it wasn’t. It wasn’t just one play. I strongly DON’T believe in that. It was time for a change, and I’m thankful on Thanksgiving weekend that UND football gets the opportunity to revitalize the program with Bubba’s presumed willingness.

That’s Div. I college football.
Start selling insurance otherwise if you DON’T like it. I know that sounds cutthroat but it’s reality. No one forces you to coach college football. With that said I wish Coach Fruechte and Coach Olson the best; they’re good guys, but again, this is about coaching football, not being simply a nice guy. Think Bubba … simply being nice doesn’t win football games.

agreed...but what i kinda meant is that bubba still gets paid (not sure how und accounting goes but does the AD get off the hook and the alumni takes the hit?) and that fruchte might be the next HC on the cheap bc he for sure would take less than market value considering he went from d2 coordinator to fcs HC....how much money do we have to hire a "big name" especially to grab a guy from usd or sdac or ndac that have it made in vermillion, brookings, or fargo by the looks of it?

kinda asking if chaves thought of this when he gave bubba his extention last year.....

They are doing a national search and I hope it is a true national search.

If we can't afford a national search, then we have bigger problems than Bubba.

If we aren't able to fund FB properly, then we should just drop the sport. Why pump resources into a program if we aren't serious about building a winner? And no, that damn Pioneer League is not an option, in case anyone was thinking of bringing it up.

Me either. I get that a coach of any kind should have some knowledge about who to hire, but that's crazy that he may have had the most power at that time.

He didn’t.

Over $300,000 annually plus bonus incentives.

Doubtful on buyout, transition to different position likely facilities a transitioned salary over x number of years.

Did the 750k buyout happen or some other shenanigan?

No “shenanigans “.

I would agree but SDSU (San Diego) being crappy and lacking talent helps UND's case.  Schmidt could be looking at 1) Next HC at UND or 2) next year as DC and potentially fired if that program doesn't turn it around.  Never hurts to look more than your current pay check down the road.  If SDSU had a winning record and top or improving D Schmidt probably not interested in UND at all.

It’s his first year in San Diego and the head coaches 2nd year, so I don’t think anyone is on the hot seat at SDSU. Sure, Schmidt could come back (wife from crookston and him being from Mandan) but I don’t think moving down to D1AA his helping him reach the pinnacle of college coaching (and that’s a D1A HC position).

Going 3-8 at San Diego State won’t get you to the pinnacle of college coaching, either.

With all due respect, though, since I am very confident Schmidt will apply, I don’t think he should meet preferred criteria. He hasn’t been a college head coach (therefore not with successful head coach experience) and he hasn’t been a successful coordinator. His time at UND as defensive coordinator was without a playoff win, thus, the same as Bubba. And his time at Washington and Fresno State should rightfully be overshadowed by DeBoer’s capabilities in my opinion.

There hopefully will be better candidates.

We know it'll be a former UND guy.....cause that's how UND roles....so which one is the only question.

I guess it's Schmidts job to lose?

How do you know that? I’m not sure the job has even been posted and Schmidt hasn’t applied yet.

If und “has” to hire a und connected individual I would take Tim Tibesar. That would be the only guy that I’m interested in.  The others mentioned.   No thank  you.

Regardless…it feels like Christmas today with great news.

I want an actual head coach not some coordinator.

Two different things.

So you’re saying someone that’s a head coach right now? Or mean something else by that? If you mean current HC, then would think D2 ranks is likely. Doubt we could poach an FCS coach.
