Shawn-O
NDSU's new women's basketball coach, Maren Walseth, signs 5 year deal worth $150,000 per year. Looks like a solid hire. Not sure how what may or may not go on in her private life has anything to do with it, but carry on. The price tag? I don't get that part of it either. nd1sufan
Dorn is the one that is "classy". She only wants candidates that bat "her" and Amy's way and rejects the others if they don't pass the sniff test. That's real equal opportunity. Dorn runs the women's department, which is a guarantee UND will be miles ahead. And Faison is sexist when hiring. Has he make a female hire yet? Has he even interviewed a female for a head coaching position? I guess I didn't see Walseth's sexual orientation publicized. Where did you find out this information? Do you have a link? Bison Dan
$150k per year for a program that drew a whopping 721 people per game last year? I wonder if Dorn has complete autonomy to hire and determine salaries, or whether Taylor actually approved this? So Bubba gets 150k for a program with a whopping 2500 for their last game? Taylor is the boss, period. If he doesn't agree it doesn't happen. Face it hockey takes all the money so the rest of the athletic dept. gets the crumbs, as seen by the salaries that Faison pays. You're comparing one game's attendance to a whole season. Not exactly apples to apples. And if UND only pays "crumbs" but still has successful women's basketball and volleyball programs, what's NDSU's excuse?

If he doesn't agree it doesn't happen. $150k is his base pay before any bonuses/media contracts/camps/etc and attendance at the last game was 6k (which is terrible, but that's another argument). I know those don't exactly line up with the talking points you were sent over here with, but it is what it is. NDSU WBB averaged less than 800 all year. bincitysioux
Let's continue the discussion without the sidebar of anyone's sexual orientation. That subject has no bearing on the topic at hand. This is, after all, a sports website.

If the women are remotely competitive they will draw. They haven't been. Think of it as a major investment.

Last winning record for NDSU's women's basketball is 2009-10 (16-13)....its been a long time and their attendance is proving no one wants to see a losing team, plus the only Dakota team not to make the dance (has to sting a little). If the coach is a proven winner people will come.
Matt
Classy... but not surprised And what is the UND way? Homophobia? Women's basketball conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances? That seems about right.

Who would take that job after seeing the results of the last coach and Dorn still there, without over paying?

UND1983
Kind of like your FB program, right? Track programs? Softball, Baseball, and soccer. Maybe you should be looking closer to home? Keep pumping big money into track and field. For every dollar you put in you will get a peso back. If your track and softball teams sucked you wouldn't even know they existed or talk about them on message boards. All the sports you listed (minus baseball in the South - which we are not located in) are essentially worthless to the majority of every fanbase in America. If they are good, awesome. If not, oh well.

jdub27
This would make a nice recruiting letter as to why not to attend UND. The FU faithful spout the exact same line when discussing their under-performing non-revenue sports. And lately when discussing their former revenue turned non-revenue sports of WBB and VB. UND1983
This would make a nice recruiting letter as to why not to attend UND. Which is why fans don't write recruiting letters. They fake support for lower-tier sports on their rival's message boards.
UND92,96
Especially after her suspension that was swept under the run until accidentally stumbled upon by The Forum. Exactly. I suspect there's fear of a lawsuit, but between that incident and a couple of terrible hires, there are plenty of non-discriminatory reasons to justify her ouster. Who would take that job after seeing the results of the last coach and Dorn still there, without over paying? Was. The key word is "Was". With Walseth and a new arena, that will change quickly. Overpaid? No, $150 allows you to bring in a quality coach and insure relative equity between the mens/womens programs. Good move NDSU.
