Agreed.  But why would any team in the Big Sky leave for a Summit League that would once again be shown as a stopping point and not a permanent home?

Also a problem that arises is it leaves the Big Sky only 8 schools (PSU, ISU, UC-Davis, Cal Poly, Sac St, SUU, NAU, and WSU) and only 6 for all other sports besides football.  But I guess that wouldn't be the Summit Leagues problem!!

Dixie St has made noise about moving up from DII in the past.  They have a nice stadium and arena and have just upgraded them.

UTRGV wants to start fb, so they could join it fb only.  Azusa Pacific is one year behind Cal Baptist and they have good facilities too.

Weber St has shown more athletically than N Colo, but they would be much harder to draw out.

I believe it would change the landscape of the conference for the positive because you have the 4 Dakota schools that are geographic outliers in regard to D1 conferences would likely be together for the forseeable future. I have to think that the four Dakota schools, plus two Montanas with Idaho, EWU, DU and UNC would be a very stable conference with the ability to strengthen over time. Heck, at that point totally re-brand the conference with a different name and look.

So,

ORU and Omaha could go the the WAC and form a true central division with NMSU, UTRGV, and UMKC.  That's a relatively strong or at least improving basketball conference.

WIU goes to the OVC filling in for Murray and rejoins EIU .

IPFW and IUPUI go to the Horizon

The WAC is still far flung, but better.  The other schools are happier.

That proposed conference would be permanent.  Nobody is leaving that setup.

You know, if you are going to successfully pitch something you need to brand it.  By branding it you make it real and it gives it traction.  Our hypothetical western conference needs a name.  A great name.

Can't be:

WAC - Western Athletic Conference

Western Conference - Old Big Ten

Great West Conference - Ugh!  Bad memories.  Defunct...maybe we could resurrect it.

American West Conference - defunct

Big West - Taken

Can't have mountains because we don't have mountains over here.  Can't be plains because our western mates have mountains.   Hmmm...let me think...

Just a thought.... All schools fit the definition(except Denver and No Colo unless you count Jim Bridger going to Colorado after the expedition ) of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

It will be a long, long, long time before any of the MNSCU schools even think of D-1. It would be hard to see Mankato and Duluth give up FB. SCSU is always in a budget crunch.

If there are 2 spots in the Summit for whatever reason, it wouldn't hurt to throw a feeler to the Montana schools.

Grand Valley State ready to move yet?

Think the hold up is the MVFC doesn't want newbie FCS programs.  The Slummit would have to sponsor fb.  GVSU and Wayne St make a great pair.  But both of them wouldn't hang around long, and the Slummit still wouldn't have needed stability.

If the Montanas are interested, Idaho sure will be.  EWU needs to hang around those three.  As someone said earlier, two groups of four isolated schools makes a great regional and academic conference.

EWU brings down the academics, but geographically they do make a good travel partner for Idaho.
