Anderson their captain that Kaip busted up. He said he had five or six stiches. This ref really lost control of the game. IMO it could have gotten really ugly. In the 3rd he called an elbow by Radke, but didn't call the one that Porter took. Porter's hit was making a valuable play, getting the puck out of the zone shorthanded (I think). The retaliation was just that. HAS to be called. One question, I thought that goalies couldn't go to the bench except for equipment issues. Lawson was there all the time. Oh, well reports out of Orono have HE ref Hansen stalking Maine player Josh Soares down the tunnel to confront him about some choice words Soares had for him following the game. Police were called in to pull the ref away and then escort him to wherever he should've been. I've also heard that Hansen had to be pulled away from Maine's coach. Actually that was Zajac and Waldrop and then they proceeded to try and trash talk each other in the boxes. It was funny. It was an excellent game tonight. Good to see the boys back again. Hopefully, we can continue this into the next couple of months. Kaips fight was awesome, I had the perfect view directly across from it. I thought the AA player was going to break his stick on Porters, trying to get him to move it! It sure was good to be at a game where emotions were running high. Alaska was doing the same thing all Friday night, I didn't see it AS much Saturday. They weren't using it to injure, merely to tie up the other player at the face off. farce poobah Posted January 14, 2007 Share Posted January 14, 2007 Compared to Friday, we did a much better job clearing out the traffic in front of Phil, only a couple times were there guys camped out whacking at rebounds. Some of that was good coverage in front, but mostly we had better pressure in our defensive zone, and didn't let UAA get set up with traffic in front of Phil. Lamoureaux with a couple great saves while the outcome was in doubt, include two quick in succession right after our 3rd goal. He was sharp, and [knock on wood] looks healthy. The other big deal tonight was the PK. 7 powerplays, 5 shots, no goals. (We do need to take fewer silly penalties ....) Very good signs for the upcoming stretch run, including the feistiness. When we play physically, we play well. (Or maybe when we're playing well, we play physically.) Either way, that edge is what was missing the first 15 games. Good to see it coming out. The linesman were quick to jump into any fray except for the Kaip fight. I'll disagree. This is different than the "He blew a call" or whatever things. The NCAA enforces a no fight rule. When there is a no fight rule in place (one I actually favor, so don't get the wrong opinion), you have to counter the reasoning for allowing fights in other ways. The most obvious way to do it is to have coaches and players on board with this and play in a style that doesn't resort to cheap shots and poor sportsmanship. Of course, that's rather idealistic and naive. So, the practical solution is to add enforcement and protection aspects to the rule book and, hence, the officials' jobs. Friesema, as a ref in this league, has to step up and protect the players on both sides. He failed to do that. It teetered on the brink last night and was out of control at times tonight. He has to set the tone of what is and isn't allowed and Friesema didn't do that. As for the HE incident, holy cow.... am I understanding this right? An HE official confronted a player? Or did a player confront the official? WOW! I think HE may be short an official! This has definitely been a notable year in the area of officiating.... Means and perhaps Jutting accosting Campion and now Hanson pretty much ending his HEA career. Lives-to-Play- Really? Somehow your response doesn't surprise me in the least. Finley, Zajac, and Kaip played MAGNIFICENTLY tonight despite not registering a point. Props to Kaip (again) and Radke for taking on players who were bigger than they were. Anderson had 3 inches and something like 11 pounds on Kaip (6'1 200 vs 6'4" 211 or so IIRC). As for if this was the best game we've had all season... I don't know.. defensively the Saturday game vs. CC was pretty darn good. Offensively speaking, yeah, I think this is right up there. "We definitely made a point to make sure everyone knows this is our home ice,'' Kaip said. "I think that was what we were lacking earlier this year.'' The point came across loud and clear when the Sioux confronted Lawson upon completion of the warmups. "He's got his pre-game rituals, and some of us might take exception with the way he treats our fans and the way he presents himself in our rink,'' Kaip said.
