It’s not…but when UND’s whole experience is predicated on hell week and taking pride in how grueling it is (kids puking, etc), bad things can happen. Unless people know more than I’ve seen, we don’t know the circumstances, precautions taken, or situation at ASU. If this happened in UND’s Ironman would we be screaming for Jax and staffs heads on pikes? Or maybe we’d give some benefit of the doubt until the facts come out.. Eg: This could’ve been a congenital issue or something completely unrelated to the temperature or staff’s handling- that stuff happens. So I’ll be hoping the kid fully recovers and holding judgement and pitchforks until negligence is confirmed. 3 Quote
brianvf Posted August 25 Posted August 25 ASU player is Matthew Mayich, a transfer from Clarkson. Had a "cardiac event" and is still in a coma. How do you go about getting tickets for that series? My middle son just moved to Westminster and I would like to take him to the game in December. Any help would be greatly appreciated. brianvf Posted August 26 Posted August 26 That's probably not going to help with recruiting. https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2026/08/25_New-Northeastern-Arena-Delayed.php Quote Construction on Northeastern's new multi-purpose arena has been delayed until "spring or summer" of 2029, according to an email obtained by The Huntington News. Originally, the facility, which will be the new home for Northeastern hockey, was to open in Fall of 2028. As a result, Northeastern will be without a home arena for another three seasons instead of two. This upcoming season, Northeastern is playing "home" games at various other nearby venues. 1 Quote
cberkas Posted Thursday at 05:56 PM Author Posted Thursday at 05:56 PM It's free to all. These companies and groups that do these military style leadership courses/workouts are scams. Athletic departments at schools shouldn't use these and save the money for better things. I've seen countless videos of these courses, and they could care less about safety. 1 Quote
atxsioux Posted Friday at 02:57 PM Posted Friday at 02:57 PM I think there needs to be a little nuance to the discussion still at this point to draw any specific conclusions. First off - really hope the kid can pull through and get out of this alive. Just a terrible situation for obviously him, his family, and teammates In general there were likely some mistakes made with this workout but until we know the actual level of difficulty, how all the players were reacting to it, health conditions, etc, its hard to say with certainty IMO to what degree everyone is at fault. I've seen it reported both ways that he collapsed from a heat related illness and also from a cardiac event so that aspect as far as I've seen isn't even certain. (and unfortunately it seems when most of these cardiac events happen it was unknown to anyone involved that the athlete was at risk) 2 Quote

cberkas Posted yesterday at 04:14 AM Author Posted yesterday at 04:14 AM Matthew Mayich family's attorney is a former deputy AG of Arizona. Yay, now ASU is going to find a way to screw the students again like they did when they closed the Lake Havasu campus. Quote “It’s very clear to me that this is a time when adults have to do the right thing — sometimes the right thing is the hard thing — and from everything I can tell and the leads we have, ASU is not handling this responsibly,” said Rob Carey, the former deputy chief attorney general of Arizona, who added the university “seems to be circling the wagons.” Quote “A kid’s life was basically ruined, the family is devastated, and people refuse to accept responsibility,” Carey said. Last week, Chris Fiscus, vice president of ASU media relations, said the school’s athletic department has heat illness guidelines in place, informed by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and institutional guidelines and requirements relating to the engagement of outside entities who interact with student-athletes. Fiscus declined to answer questions about who authorized the Aug. 20 workout and whether any coaches or trainers were present. Fiscus said last week the review would be led by ASU senior vice president James Rund, who, according to his ASU biography, also serves as the executive vice chair for Sun Devil Sports and filled in as ASU’s interim vice president for Sun Devil Athletics in 2023-24. Rund received his doctorate in education from Arizona State. Mayich family attorney says ‘ASU is not handling this responsibly’ (it's free) Quote

Would assume it was Ziesel based on his history, but that's the part we don't have detail on supposedly not the first time Ziesel has led this type of class. They're always cookie-cutter/the same. it really shouldn't be that hard to obtain the demo of it if it is his plan/program. think the joy of it for any athlete these are going to sound pretty similar to things that you did during 2 a days back in the day/typical for summer training, but when you bring in someone outside you expose yourself to issues seems like a nice way for ASU to fire Powers for cause and get a better coach lol 1 Quote

SIOUXFAN97 Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago Arizona State's Matthew Mayich has 'zero chance of recovery' a young hockey player and two young football players dead within 2 weeks......maybe stop looking at the schools and the "military workout" and look elsewhere or just keep your head in the sand.......like @iramurphy Quote

upnorthkid Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I mean if this is real rather than just his attorney pushing a narrative... is ASU at risk of cancelling/forfeiting their season? getting awfully tight to the season and don't see how you could keep any of the staff in this type of situation if there truly are players saying the anonymous comments provided obviously quite unprecedented, but i don't see how any player would be comfortable taking the ice if this is true Quote

I don't think it would be hard to bring in an interim coach if Powers is let go. They could have done this out at Payson at ASU Footballs Camp Tontozona, in the mountains where it would be cooler and over the weekend. Off topic but was talking to the guys in my project class about how ASU should have all the parking lots covered with solar panels to provide shade. That the sidewalks should have canvas covers that are spaced out to create shaded areas. Even misters like all the bars and restaurants have here for the people that sit outside Poly campus does a dirt and concrete offset walkways to absorb heat. Quote
cberkas Posted 7 hours ago Author Posted 7 hours ago A little humor into the ASU situation, Powers took Smaby saying "you go to Arizona State because you are soft" serious and brought in a former Green Beret to make them tougher. I can just see opposing student sections this season having signs telling Arizona State players to stay hydrated or something similar. I hope he recovers but with him being in a coma still, my hopes are not high. Quote
cberkas Posted 5 hours ago Author Posted 5 hours ago I wouldn’t say it could be possible. If about 10 players decide to leave and enter the transfer portal or go back to juniors, then I’d say it’s possible. Quote

Its completely believable that, that guy will absolutely just make things up, write about his random thought and then re-tweet it out under the chn app to circulate to make a headline. And like clockwork the CHL cheerleaders pick it up like the latest copy of Beaver Fever Monthly 1 Quote
