Only two kind of surprises to me are Klee and Strathman as both would of had roles and played a good amount of minutes this next season.

Wonder if Engel will now take his game to a D3 as initially anticipated.

Verhoeff - Emery

Carels*** - Laurila

Mackenzie - Lindberg

With rumors of another possible WHL player (unconfirmed). UND will likely want to dress extra D again this next year. I like Strath but he was looking at 6th or 7th spot rotation again this year playing 10-12 minutes per game.  He has offensive upside and he probably wants to play PP and more minutes. I get it.

I feel like this is the new norm.  Bottom of the lineup players with upside just aren't going to stick around.  Even with Wiebe/Liv moving on, Strath was going to be the #4 at best next year behind Verhoeff, Emery, and Laurila.  Good change MacKenzie would leapfrog him too.  That isn't even accounting for freshman commits or transfers that are incoming.  Very good change Strath has the same row in 26-27 here as he did in 25-26.  Probably not enough for him.  Similar thing to Klee, would he have ever gotten above a 3rd line spot in his career here?  I'm not sure.

Pretty thin on D, at this point, and that’s even assuming the Rangers don’t sign E.J.

I know the popular take is this must mean we’re going to see a bunch of CHL studs come in. But this looks to me like we’re going fishing in the portal again, which to me is a net loss. I’d rather have J.J. and Strathman over anything we might snag in the portal to replace them.

I hope we are targeting Evan Murr hard. There will be talent on the backend next year for sure, but too much youth

Agreed. The system we have in front of us just seems a bit sleazy and slimy. You wonder how much there are secret conversations going on long before today between players’ agents and other programs.

I love the excitement and intangibles that offensive minded defenseman can bring but I'd argue this group could use 1 more stay at home/shutdown guy more than anything come tournament time.  Give me a 6'3" 200lb guy that can skate and will be around 3-4 years developing his offensive game.

UND still has guys on the back-end that can help create offense without Carels, Dupont, etc.  I'm more concerned with their ability to control play against top lines from teams like Duluth, Michigan, BU, BC and so on.

Give me a good defensive defenseman and find another scoring forward this year, (specifically a center after losing Rickwood.)

Edit: all that being said, if you have the opportunity for Carels, Dupont, or someone like that you have to take them and that solves that but unfortunately you'll be having the same conversation next year or two years from now.

Strathmann to the portal us upsetting. Didn't produce a lot of points but still liked his game. He was okay going back to juniors another year. He must be worried about playing time seeing who is probably coming in. Swapping these soon to be upperclassmen for young kids from the CHL isn't always a good thing. It's been a few years since we had a player on D stay all 4 years?

Sometimes these moves are kinda dictated by the club that drafted players too, maybe they want or have already backdoor coordinated a spot where they want specific development in and the current team just wasn't a fit for that anymore... so many moving parts, opinions.

I expect Emery, Mackenzie, and Laurilla all to be very dependable in their own zone. (they'll all be 20 years old next year which helps offset the "young" narrative IMO).

Liked Strathman but at the end of the day if you held a gun to my head I'd take Laurilla over him by a hair.

Assuming we add Carels he's also known for being defense first before offense as well. Then add in another year of growth from KV and look out.

Some really interesting names in the portal.
Hall from SCSU is a good player, and he’s actually not going to UMN. Skahan in there too.
Can’t wait to see what pieces Bryn has lined up.

I can see Klee going to St Thomas to be close to his family.

I look at this being a reset of roster management. This team was a bunch of 2nd and 3rd liners, an overall good team with balanced scoring. Bryn is setting up for the future where you have high end followed by solid players that give balanced scoring with a shutdown line.

Like Jordan Schmaltz recently said on one of his podcasts, go out and get yourself a CBS line. As if it’s that simple, lol.
