Media Stories on the Sioux Name

IM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE PEOPLE IN POWER, IM TALIKING ABOUT THE PUBLIC!

The American Public?

You mean that Sesame Street minded short-attention-span group out there today? The group that if you polled 100 people nationally on the street right now, more would be able to tell you the movie that premiered last night at midnight than could tell you the name of their Congressman or could find North Dakota on a world map?

That American Public?

If you're looking for that immediate gratification and nothing more (no substance), "7 out of 10*" group to come save you, you're in tougher shape than the SL lawsuit in Federal court.

They dozed through the Patriot Act (from the right) and Obamacare (from the left).

The American Public won't awaken over this.

ok, you got me, you have adequately presented a sound argument which explains why national media outlets like CNN, the New York Times, Washington Post, and the AP ALL write stories on the Sioux name but LEAVE OUT the part about the Sioux Native American's fight against the NCAA. It's because NO One cares about that part of the story, just the other parts! I get it.

I am so glad there are smart people like you around to help me see the way...wheeewsaa!

Do you also want them to include the part that some Native Americans also filed a lawsuit against the school to have the nickname removed? I mean you wouldn't want to leave out any part of the story now would you?

and we shouldn't give a goddam about the people in power because IM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE PEOPLE IN POWER, IM TALIKING ABOUT THE PUBLIC! I'm talking about getting the message out to the public because public perception in the only play we have against the "people in power" the public does not know the truth because the media is not reporting it nationally. With the exception of one article from ESPN, non of the articles in the NATIONAL forum tell the truth about the Sioux fight to keep the name. Sorry pal, they just don't. I've read/listened to 30 articles/segments in the last 60 days in the national media and they are just plain leaving it out. It's a fact. Period!!

"The public"? What is that? Most NoDaks I know could care less about Indian Country unless they're going to a casino.

Not sure what color the sky is in your world, but "the public" probably cares less about NAs than they do about whether gas is going about $4/gallon or whether another Kim Kardasian sex tape is "leaked" on the internet. If you think "the public" can "save" the Sioux moniker for UND I have a slightly used bridge in New York you may be interested in ...

So I decided to go to the Sunday night game in Denver va the Badgers, ya know the first round of the WCHA playoffs two weeks ago. I usually don't get to go to DU games because they play at the same time as the Sioux so I would see the outcome of the Sioux game on the scoreboard and it would ruin my Sioux game for me...

Anyway I figured I would take my son to the game, a chance to see some good college hockey live. We got in for free after looking for tickets for about 2 mins. We got tickes in the gold club free food and all. The arena was about 1/2 full, there were about 300 Wiscy fans there, needless to say a far cry from a Sioux DU regular season game.

Anyhow, I had quite an interesting evening to say the least. See I wore my Sioux jersey, ya know Sioux pride and all. I got zero !@#$ for it BTW. The bizzare thing was that I was approached by people, I would guess somewhere between 10 and 15 times, asking me what is going on with the Sioux name battle.

First I got questions about it in the food line in the gold club. Then at my seat, then in the smoking area. Later we decided to go sit with the Wisconsin fans and cheer them over DU because DU fans are pathetic hockey fans to say the least. I sat right behind Dahl's mom and #19's mom, so they ask me about the name, the people behind me ask me about the name. During the intermission, we had two different people walk over to our seats to ask about the name.

So no one cares about it huh"??

BTW, I asked all of them if they were aware that Native Americans were leading the fight to keep the name and guess how many of them did??

Ya, you got it buddy, Zero!! The really funny thing was how uniform their response was when I told them the truth of the matter. "Someone needs to do something about the NCAA, they are out of control"

...So you keep thinking that no one cares becase the MEDIA hasn't told you to care, and I'll keep knowing the truth about it and you. People care. Period!!

Did you remind them of Wisconsin's policy on not scheduling teams with H&A nicknames? Do those fans know Wisconsin cannot schedule UND? The NCAA is bad enough...the Wisconsin policy is worse.

Oh yeah, of course I did and as one would predict they knew nothing of it.

Makes you wonder if Minnesota and Iowa fans know about their policies...IMO its a BS policy.

Of course they're BS policies. They come from the academics, not the athletic departments. Maturi and Alvarez have said as much, but they're still bound to obey them.

I cannot disagree with your sentiment. I guess it would be more pragmatic of me to just let it go.

But if we are going to be realists about this situation then lets be honest about the future of Sioux/North Dakota college hockey. When you consider the move to the NCHC in conjunction with the Fighting Sioux name abolishment a pragmatic view of the programs future suggests the very real possibility of a significant diminishment of the currently prestige we all enjoy.

If one would choose to deny this truth much in the same way you point out my denial regarding faith in people then I will give an example to illustrate the reality of this possibility;

Since I blame Myles Brand for this who debacle I will use the Indiana basketball program as my example. Indiana used to be a Nationally respected college basketball powerhouse. After Brand rammed his fist into the heart of the program it was over. Now Indiana basketball is just another team.

If you all don't think it can happen to the Fighting Sioux ya best be thinking again, just like Sicatoca helped me do here today...

I agree that UND hockey may be approching a crossroads, where things could take a dramatic turn. However, I'd attribute it almost entirely to the conference change. Losing Minnesota and Wisconsin and not getting Notre Dame (not that any of it was UND's fault) could prove very damaging. Regardless of what we like to think of UND's superiority, we are still a school with less national recognition (beyond hockey at least).

I think you are correct in your concerns about the future of UND hockey. The prestige of the WCHA without UND, Minnesota, Denver, CC, UMD and Wisconsin is not the same. That same prestige is not yet associated with the NCHC. That is why it is important to continue to schedule the Big 10 schools. The name is not the factor. Indiana didn't lose their name and they were already struggling before they dumped Knight. Aren't they playing Kentucky in the S16 today? I don't know that I would call that "just another team". The name isn't UND hockey and the name isn't UND athletics. We will be fine without it. For those of you who are superstitious, UND has never won an NCAA title wearing the present logo uniforms no matter what the color of the hockey sweater. We win with these new uni's, and we will have half of the hockey fans converted on that factor alone.

I wouldn't bet against that.

However we haven't won a title since moving into the new REA..should we also go back to the old REA to win a title. You can take the superstious angle with a grain of salt. But I do agree with the rest of your post.

I think this falls under the category of chasing rainbows. Tell me a non conference rivalry in any college sport that would even be in the same universe as UND Minnesota? You need conference competition to sustain that.

I knew that but easier to change Uniforms than arenas.
